Minister Calls for Immediate Inspections to Swimming Pools in Greek Hotels

Greek Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis has issued a mandate to increase inspections at swimming pools that operate in tourist accommodation units in Greece.

Following the recent drowning events in hotel swimming pools, the minister has called for immediate inspections to check if swimming pools operating in hotels and other tourist accommodation units in the country are licensed and follow all safety measures.

According to the minister, particular emphasis should be shown on safety measures and the presence of a supervisor (lifeguard), as required by the current legislation.

Greece: Specialized Equipment Sent to Aid Search for Missing Woman

Greek authorities have sent a specialized police unit with geolocating equipment to an Aegean island to help in the search for a British scientist who went missing after apparently going for a morning run.

Police said Wednesday a military helicopter transported the team to the island of Ikaria, where police, the fire department, coast guard and volunteers are searching for Cyprus-based astrophysicist Natalie Christopher who was reported missing on Monday by her partner, with whom she was vacationing.

Blood spots found in hotel room of British astrophysicist missing on Greek island

Greek police are investigating blood spots found in the hotel room of a British astrophysicist who disappeared on the Aegean island of Ikaria.

A search for Dr Natalie Christopher, involving Greek police, civil protection officers, volunteers and a helicopter, will resume today.

The 34-year-old told her boyfriend she was going for a run on Monday morning but has not been heard from since.

Spots of blood have been found on sheets and pillows in the hotel room the couple shared, with the boyfriend telling police they were from a nosebleed that Dr Christopher suffered the night before.

There were also blood spots in front of a mirror, according to the owner of the hotel, quoted by Greek media.

Detectives have sent the sheets to a laboratory for DNA testing and want to establish if it was a natural nosebleed or the result of some kind of trauma.

Police are also investigating reports that the couple may have slept in separate rooms the night before the British woman’s disappearance.

A cleaner at the hotel told Greek media that she found sheets spread out on a sofa in the hotel suite “which may indicate the couple was sleeping in separate rooms.”

Global Water Crisis: Greece Ranks 26th in the World in Water Scarcity

Surprisingly, water is increasingly becoming an issue on the continent of Europe as well. According to the World Resources Institute data, seven EU countries are already suffering from water scarcity, including Spain, Italy and Belgium, while Greece is in 26th place in the world, according to a joint study undertaken last year by the Joint Research Center (JRC).

Greece is expected to experience increased water shortages in the future, according to their prognostications.

Experts say that European citizens themselves will not be deprived of drinking water in the near future, but the effects of water scarcity will be evident in forests and agricultural crops, as well as in industry and many other sectors.

What I've heard, the body of Natalie Christopher has been found down a steep slope in a ravine close to the hotel where she was staying. Too early to determine cause of death, police investigating.
