Everyone will have to pay road tax

Greece’s road tax system is set for big changes with Alternate Finance Minister Tryfon Alexiadis’s plan to force all vehicle owners to pay a levy, even if they had hitherto been exempt.

In terms of road tax, which is payable by the end of the year, the plan will provide for the inclusion among paying drivers of those who acquired their vehicles after 2010. Therefore, some 100,000 vehicle owners will have to pay road tax for the first time, meaning all car and motorcycle owners will now be burdened with the levy.

As a Finance Ministry official explains, the owners of vehicles of 1,400 to 1,600 cc who currently pay no road tax because their vehicles emit lower levels of pollutants will now have to start paying, while the ministry intends to reduce medium-sized vehicles’ tax as well as that of older vehicles that currently pay a high tax.

The Finance Ministry’s decision for the 2016 road tax, likely payable by mid-January...

Vehicles registered up until 2000 will see tax cuts ranging from 5.66 to 6.82 percent, while vehicles registered after November 2010 and emitting over 100 micrograms per kilometer will pay extra road tax ranging from 4.55 to 6.67 percent.

Road tax notices are up and payable by end-December

The new road tax notices for 2016 have been uploaded on the Finance Ministry’s Taxisnet website, with increases for hundreds of thousands of vehicle owners and discounts for others.

The Finance Ministry has announced that the tax must be paid by December 31, but the delay already recorded in the process will likely mean that an extension up until the middle of January will be granted.

Just had an email from a Mick Alcock:

Hello - I have a holiday home in Crete and am currently in UK. My Greek accountant has just sent me an email with my Greek Road Tax details attached for payment by 31 December. Do you know how I go about paying the tax through my online banking with Piraeus Bank.

Anyone know if / how it's possible?

I can access the website via the link you kindly provided. I can key in my AFM and the registration number and 2015. However, when I press enter I get a red error message in Greek and no print option!  Still awaiting a reply from my Accountant

Typo, or does it actually say 2015? Should say 2016.

Click Αναζητηση after entering tax number and registration number and you should get a red message. Click on Εκτυπωση and you should get the tax statement to print.

Dare I ask? If you're in the UK why do you want to print it? Or is it an online receipt?

Extension granted for road tax payment after all

The Finance Ministry announced on Thursday the extension of the deadline for the payment of the 2016 road tax until Friday, January 8, 2016.

The ministry later issued a statement confirming that the extension granted would be the only one, and that it also concerned the deadline for the submission of license plates by owners who would rather avoid having to pay the tax than use their vehicles.
