Tax inequality gets greater every year

The pool of businesses and households in Greece that is being called on to pay ever-increasing taxes keeps shrinking so that 19 percent of taxpayers are responsible for covering 90 percent of the overall income tax.

At the same time, 4.5 percent of businesses are paying 83 percent of the country’s corporate tax, and 33 percent of property owners pay 66 percent of the Single Property Tax (ENFIA).

Greece Called to Apply EU's New PNR Rules for Travelers

The European Commission on Thursday called on Greece and 13 other EU member states to apply the new PNR (Passenger Name Record) rules, which require travelers to provide detailed personal information ahead of travel.

According to the Commission, the processing of PNR data is an important tool for fighting terrorism and serious crime, helping to trace suspicious travel patterns and identify potential criminals and terrorists, including those previously unknown to law-enforcement authorities.

Meanwhile, travelers will be required to provide the following information under the PNR Directive:

– Date of booking / issue of ticket
– Scheduled date (s) of travel
– All payment details including billing address

– Passenger’s travel history including booking confirmations, ticket checks, passenger arrival information, or ticket last-minute purchase
– Information on unaccompanied minors under 18 including name and sex of minor, age, language or languages spoken, name and contact details of the guardian on departure and relationship with the minor, name and contact details of guardian arrival and relationship with the minor, departure and arrival agent
– Ticket information including ticket number, date of issue, single-pass tickets and Automated Ticket Fare Quote
– Seating number and relevant data
– Shared code data
– All baggage information

The directive is aimed at preventing, detecting and investigating terrorism and other forms of crime including drugs and human trafficking, child sexual exploitation, among others.

DVLA asks UK drivers to retake eye test

UK drivers are being urged to test their eyesight after a DVLA survey suggested 50% of motorists were not aware of the minimum standards needed for a licence.

Drivers must be able to read a number plate from 20m (65ft) away.

Drivers over the age of 70 must actively make a declaration every three years that they are fit to drive - but do not actually have to pass a test.

Greeks urged to leave homes as wildfires spread near Athens
Firefighters from across the country have been deployed to Kineta resort region

Greek authorities have urged residents of a coastal region near Athens to abandon their homes as an uncontrolled wildfire spread on Monday, closing one of Greece’s busiest motorways, halting trains and sending plumes of smoke over the capital.

Authorities deployed firefighters and equipment from across Greece to deal with the massive blaze at Kineta, a small resort town about 54km (35 miles) west of Athens on a route used by tens of thousands of drivers daily to reach the Peloponnese peninsula.

Utterly shocking.  The article says it's down to reductions in wages and salaries.  No mention of tax evasion.

Be interested to see the comparable figures for the UK. Might not be that different, actually.
