Greek Island Police Reject UK Tabloid Claims of Teens Poisoned by Bootleg Booze

According to local news website Imerazante.gr, the Ionian Islands General Regional Police Directorate and the police chief of the Zakynthos Police Department contacted the administration and doctors of Zakynthos General Hospital and were informed that no such incidents had been recorded in the hospital’s logbook of emergency incidents.

According to the British reports, the young Britons claimed to have fallen ill after visiting a string of bars in Laganas, despite some of them having just three drinks the entire night.

An investigation by The Sun on Sunday claims it found traces of highly toxic methanol in bootleg vodka sold in one of the bars.

Getting a round in one of the most important foreign phrases for holiday Britons

More than one in four (28%) UK adults say they learnt how to ask for two beers, or other drinks, in the local language during their most recent holiday abroad, according to a British Council survey.

And it also reveals that politeness is alive and well, with “Please” and “Thank you” the most common words learned by holidaymakers (72%).

Gas and electricity bills to rise after Ofgem increases safeguard tariff by £47 a year

Ofgem has increased the maximum amount energy companies can charge people on variable tariffs by £47 a year due to higher wholesale energy costs.

The energy regulator said its safeguard tariff will rise to £1,136 in October for those who pre-pay for their fuel.

The cap is designed to protect five million households from being overcharged, having been extended by a further one million homes earlier this year.
