A Thessaloniki court on Wednesday handed an 18-year prison sentence to Eleftherios Valavanis, a former mayor of the municipality of Apostolos Pavlos in Imathia, northern Greece, for embezzling 1.3 million euros in municipal funds.

Valavanis... was found guilty of embezzling the sum of 400,000 euros donated... following a road accident that left 11 Makrochori high school students dead in the Vale of Tempe in 2003, among other charges.

Both shocking in their very different ways.

Did we ever find out what finally happened to the mayor of Zakinthos??? 4-5 years back he robbed the council treasury, then tried to set fire to it to cover his tracks, was caught, escaped for about a year and then caught again.

Not sure... wasn't he sentenced to prison? Or it miight've been Korydalos Luxury Resort. 'Fraid I've rather lost track of all the corrupt mayors and other politicians.
