Kef fire risk 23/06/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8870 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1315 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1274 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8838 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Cretan beaches swarming with illegal structures

An attempt is under way on Crete to get the bulldozers back to work as the two-year suspension of demolitions on the island has led to an increase in illegal structures erected on its beaches.

Indicatively, 154 demolition protocols are pending in Iraklio, 130 in Lasithi, 80 in Hania and six in Rethymno.

In response, the Decentralized Administration of Crete began demolitions on the seashore around a fortnight ago, while on Thursday a two-story illegal construction on Tobruk beach in Iraklio was demolished.

CLOSE ENCOUNTER Moment ‘world’s fastest shark’ is spotted off the coast of Zante as beast stalks fisherman’s boat

THIS is the chilling moment the world's fastest shark was spotted stalking a fisherman's boat off the Zante coastline.

The footage appeared to show a Shortfin Mako shark - which are found in Greek waters.

During the clip, Yiannis called from the deck: "First shark I have ever seen in our waters.

"The shark was not aggressive at all, on the contrary, it was calm and swam like a dolphin next to the boat."
https://www.thesun.ie/news/10926360/moment-worlds-fastest-shark-spotted-off-zante-coast-greece/

Typical Sun sensationalism, this time excelling itself in contradiction: "found in Greek waters" but the first one a professional Greek fisherman has ever seen / "chilling moment the world's fastest shark was spotted stalking a fisherman's boat" when the fisherman says it was calm, not aggressive. Hey friggin' ho.

If a shortfin mackerel shark then it is the world's fastest shark and, according to Wikipedia, has the world's strongest bite, "the current record for the strongest bite measured for any shark belongs to a shortfin mako... roughly 3,000 lbs. of force".

Again, according to Wikipedia,"ISAF statistics records 9 shortfin attacks on humans between 1580 and 2022, three of which were fatal, along with 20 [sport fishing] boat attacks. This mako is regularly blamed for attacks on humans and, due to its speed, power, and size, it is certainly capable of injuring and killing people. However, this species will not generally attack humans and does not seem to treat them as prey. Most modern attacks involving shortfin mako sharks are considered to have been provoked." DON'T provoke the sharks!!

It's currently classified as Endangered by the IUCN, "Shortfin mako sharks travel long distances to seek prey or mates", so it could've just been looking for a shag.

Unsophisticated, but effective, break in this morning at a 'supermarket' at Vasilikades, on the main road heading up to Fiskardo  (between Assos and Jerusalem Beach). Concrete block lobbed through window and cash box stolen but said to have a GPS tracker fitted, CCTV recorded the incident. Third or fourth such incident in recent weeks in that general area.

Scots teen left with swelling on brain after Zante bouncer 'attacked' him and left him unconscious
Conor King, 18, lay unconscious on the ground for around 15 minutes before being rushed to a Greek hospital by ambulance in the early hours of June 15.

The hotel porter, from Peebles, had been enjoying his final night out on a lad’s holiday when he was asked to leave the club after sitting on his friend’s shoulders.

But his horrified pals watched on as Conor - who they say wasn’t resisting - was floored by a punch from a member of security staff after being frog-marched to the front door area.[/b]

Android update blamed for record number of 999 calls
Google urges users to switch off Emergency SOS feature until issue resolved

Police in the UK have blamed an Android smartphone update on a record increase in accidental 999 calls.

The National Police Chiefs Council said the Emergency SOS function was resulting in emergency switchboards being overwhelmed by “silent” calls.

The emergency feature is activated when a side button on a device is repeatedly pressed, which triggers a countdown that allows the action to be cancelled by dragging a slider across the screen. However, many users appear to inadvertently initiate emergency calls when their device is in a bag or pocket.

The feature can be deactivated within the ‘Safety and Emergency’ section of Android’s settings.
