Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8955 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1166 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1227 USD   $1 USD = 0.8907 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7132 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5837 €UR
1 €UR = R21.5486 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0464 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Not sure it would make an ideal Christmas present but definitely a bit wacky - individually wrapped loo rolls in a sort of Christmassy wrapping. We've just unwrapped our first roll and it's soft and strong. Might be a tad more expensive than what's on offer at the supermarket but there's free UK delivery on orders over £20, 50% of profits go to charity and there's a 100% refund if you're not happy wiping your bum with it.

uk.whogivesacrap.org

(looks like they will deliver to Greece but it incurs extra cost).

For info only, no recommendation implied, no personal gain involved.

From the shadows of 1950s prejudices to the light of Greece and agape

A personal odyssey, unexpected connections, and a quest for Greek agape, culminates in a novel by one of Australia’s great arts leaders, Ian Roberts, celebrating the human experience – all founded on white bait.

Not really about Greece, though it's obviously been a big influence.

Problems with the Levante Ferries Kyllini - Kef service: Due to an inability to raise the left anchor the Kefalonia ferry was confined to Kyllini port last night awaiting repair and re-certification as seaworthy, last night's 19:00 Kyllini - Poros crossing delayed by two hours while a replacement ferry, the Andreas Kalvos, arrived from Zakynthos and this morning the 05:45 Poros - Kyllini and 08:15 return service didn't run. Weather could disrupt crossings over the next few days.

There are not enough Greek sailors to man ships with Greek flags

The essential reason why the Greek registry cannot be further strengthened – the Greek flag – was pointed out during an informal meeting of officials of the Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy with journalists. There are not enough Greek bridge and engine officers since there must be up to six Greeks on each commercial ship under the Greek flag based on the organisational structure.

The Greek-owned fleet has exceeded 5,000 ships. It is necessary to attract the youth to the sea and to the maritime profession as a solution to the problem. The ministry will focus on improving Maritime Education.

Problems with the Levante Ferries Kyllini - Kef service

Problem continues - the 14:15 Poros - Kyllini ferry didn't operate. Zakynthos - Kyllini schedules suspended due to the weather.

Regional and local police are warning of an increase in telephone scams on Kef. Likely these will be in Greek but not impossible scammers speak English.

Appears Levante Ferries have cancelled crossings for rest of evening and tomorrow morning at least. Anyone planning a ferry journey advised to check ahead with ferry company / agent.

Allegedly an attempted break-in to a car in Argostoli between 14:00-16:00 today. Very rare occurrence, especially during daylight.

Man found hanged from tree in Kyllini

The body of a man was found hanging from a tree in a house yard in Kyllini, western Greece, on Saturday, police said.

Authorities have not excluded foul play considering that the man’s hands were tied behind his back, according to state-run broadcaster ERT.

Hm, did he tie his hands behind his back before he hanged himself or after?  :hmm:

Keir Starmer open to return of Parthenon marbles, reports say
Labour leader gives strongest hint yet of support for loan deal with Greece if his party wins next election

The Greek government has been assured by Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour party, that in the event of electoral victory next year he will not block a prospective arrangement to return the Parthenon marbles to Athens.

Speaking through aides before talks in London with the Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Starmer gave his strongest hint yet of his support for a loan deal that would see the antiquities return to the country where they were carved 2,500 years ago.

“If a loan deal that is mutually acceptable to the British government and the Greek government will be agreed, we won’t stand in the way,” one of the Labour leader’s close allies was quoted as saying by the Financial Times.
