Firearm homicide rates in Greece are through the roof, survey showsGreece has one of the highest firearm homicide rates in Europe, according to a survey by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).Greece ranks sixth in the world, along with France, and second in Europe in firearm homicides among high-income countries with a population of more than 10 million inhabitants. Moreover, the most recent UNODC data published by the Guardian shows that Greece was ranked fifth for the most gun homicides in Europe in 2021. Albania was ranked first, Sweden second, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Moldova. Also of concern is the increased number of legal weapons circulating in Greece, with Minister of Citizen Protection Giannis Oikonomou recently stating that almost 1 million shotguns and about 4,500 rifles and firearms have been registered in the country.
Greek High Court Gives Green Light for Mykonos Tourism DevelopmentAfter government promises to stop the takeover of public beaches by private operators – exempting luxury resorts – Greece’s highest administrative court ruled in favor of a tourist project on Mykonos, that’s already overrun with them. The decision barred a marina that would be part of the development in Kalo Livadi on the island, one of Greece’s and the world’s most popular, which in the summer is overwhelmed with tourists and known for high-spending hedonism. The court rejected appeals against the project, flying in the face of the New Democracy’s pledge to try to control overtourism at the same time it’s welcoming more luxury resorts. The Greek Constitution declares all beaches public and accessible but successive governments have allowed up to half the space to be leased to private businesses although in many cases most or all of the beaches have been taken over. That has locked the public out of public beaches and protests in the summer on some islands led to a brief crackdown aimed at smaller operators using beaches while resorts were being wooed and welcomed, boasting privacy for customers.
