Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8870 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1273 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1111 USD   $1 USD = 0.9000 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.6946 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5901 €UR
1 €UR = R21.6164 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0462 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Thirty important antiquities returned from US to Greece

Thirty Greek antiquities, collectively valued at 3.7 million dollars, are being repatriated to Greece, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., announced on Friday.

The items include a Marble Aphrodite which was was recovered from a storage unit that belonged to the convicted trafficker Robin Symes, where it had been hidden since at least 1999; a 4,000-year-old Cycladic marble figure, seized from a storage unit belonging to a New York-based private collector by the ATU earlier this year; and a bronze Corinthian helmet that was smuggled out of Greece, given false provenance in Germany, and put on consignment with the New York-based art dealer Michael Ward who pled guilty to Criminal Facilitation in the Fourth Degree and admitted to purchasing stolen antiquities on consignment through his gallery as part of money-laundering scheme.

When is the last post before Christmas?

Royal Mail recommends that if you are still to send off Christmas letters and parcels that you do allow plenty of time - particularly for international deliveries.

Any items posted second class have to be made by Monday, December 18 to ensure a pre-Christmas arrival, while first class shipments must be submitted at the latest by Wednesday December 20.

Baked beans recalled over concerns the tins may contain rubber balls

Three leading supermarkets are recalling tinned beans over concerns they may contain small rubber balls that make them unsafe to eat.

Customers have been advised to not eat the products and instead return them to the store they bough them from for a full refund.

Petrol prices fall to lowest level in two years

Petrol prices have fallen to lowest level at the pumps on average for more than two years, the RAC has said.

A litre of unleaded costs about £1.43 on average, a price which was last seen at UK forecourts in October 2021.

A fall in wholesale fuel costs has resulted in lower pump prices, the RAC said, adding that petrol could fall below £1.40 in the next week.

The drop also comes after the UK competition watchdog warned that drivers were not getting a fair deal.

Thousands dying unnecessarily as NHS England ranks in bottom half of countries for patient safety

Thousands of Britons could be dying unnecessarily as the UK lags behind other countries on patient safety, according to a major new study.

The UK was ranked 21 out of 38 countries on four key patient safety indicators, with countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Norway rated among the highest, according to research from the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London.

The report found that, if the UK improved enough to rank among the top 10 countries, there would be 15,733 fewer people dying from what is described as treatable mortality – deaths which could be avoided through timely healthcare interventions. There would also be 776 fewer deaths from neonatal disorders and 870 fewer deaths from avoidable medical errors.

Unfortunate mishap in the Alykes area of Zakynthos: after the service a family requested the coffin of their ya-ya be opened before burial so they could say goodbye, face to face, for the final time. It was the wrong face. Their ya-ya had been buried earlier by a family blissfully unaware of the mix up.  Red faces at the mortuary and funeral parlour, one of the two muddled things up.
