A rescue operation was underway on Monday to save a 1.5-year-old baby bear found seriously injured by a resident of mountain village of Metsovo in Epirus, northwestern Greece.

The bear was taken to the Metsovo Veterinary Clinic with extensive facial injuries, possibly after being hit by a car within a village.

Specialists from the bear conservation agencies 'Arcturos' and 'Callisto' have arrived and are attempting to revive the injured bear and are attempting to first place an IV for fluids, after which they will assess its condition and attempt to transfer it to the Thessaloniki veterinary school.

Greece's football federation has announced that professional matches in the country would resume this weekend after a break that followed an attack against a top refereeing official.

The federation had suspended all matches in the top two divisions last weekend following what it described as "a murderous attack" two weeks ago.

Federation president Giorgos Sarris said in an interview last week that retired Scottish referee Hugh Dallas had received death threats since being appointed president of the federation's Central Committee of Referees this year.
