Eighty four new cases of coronavirus confirmed yesterday on Kefalonia by EODY, none on Ithaka.

Today's bank rate:
1 GBP = € 1.1669
1 USD = € 0.8602

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Downing Street refuses to comment on reports photo of Boris Johnson with beer handed to Met Police's partygate investigation

Downing Street has refused to comment on reports a picture of Boris Johnson holding a beer at a birthday party in Number 10 during lockdown has been handed to the Metropolitan Police's investigation.

According to the Daily Mirror, the photo shows the prime minister standing next to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who is holding a soft drink, in Number 10's cabinet room.

Sources told Sky News they remember Mr Johnson holding a beer at the event on 19 June 2020, his 56th birthday.

At the time, social gatherings indoors were still forbidden, with people only permitted to meet outside in groups of up to six people.

A No 10 spokesman refused to comment, but pointed towards previous comments made about the ongoing investigation.

Tory MP says 'we need to change the prime minister' - as he hands in no confidence letter

A former minister has declared "we need to change the prime minister" as he becomes the latest Tory MP to hand in a letter of no confidence in Boris Johnson.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Nick Gibb said: "We need to face up to hard truths. To restore trust, we need to change the Prime Minister."

Earlier, Aaron Bell, Conservative MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, said the partygate allegations and the prime minister's subsequent handling of the fallout has made his position "untenable" as he revealed he has handed in a letter of no confidence.

Online Safety Bill to be strengthened with more offences brought into scope

The Online Safety Bill has been strengthened with the addition of a number of new criminal offences to force social media firms to act on illegal content more quickly, the Government announced.

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries confirmed that offences such as revenge porn, hate crime, fraud, the sale of illegal drugs or weapons, the promotion or facilitation of suicide, people smuggling and sexual exploitation have been added to the list of priority offences and as such must be removed by platforms under the new rules.

Peter Swailes Jr spared jail despite exploiting a vulnerable man who was locked up for 40 years

A man who exploited a vulnerable victim found living in a squalid shed has walked free from court.

Peter Swailes Jr, 56, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court to a nine-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, for a modern slavery offence on Friday.

The victim had been “used and abused” for 40 years by the defendant’s father Peter Swailes Sr, the court heard. He was made to live in a horse box, a disused caravan and more recently in a shed at a traveller site in Carlisle.

The cramped shed, which he resided in for the five years up to 2018, was without heating, lighting or proper flooring and contained a soiled mattress and congealed vomit.

This was in “stark contrast” to a nearby, similar-sized shed, which was fitted with a carpet, light and gas heater and housed the family dog, prosecutors said.

Water bills in England and Wales to rise from April
Announcement follows news of increase in energy bills and national insurance contributions in same month

Households can expect their water bills to rise to an average of almost £420 a year from April, compounding a record rise in energy costs and an increase in national insurance contributions that are due in the same month.

Bills will rise by an average of 1.7% in England and Wales from April, according to the industry body Water UK, pushing up the typical annual bill by roughly £7 to £419 a year. In some parts of England bills could rise by up to 10%, while others may experience a modest decrease.

The increase will come as further unwelcome news to hard-pressed households after Thursday’s announcement of the imminent £693 increase in home energy bills, which will drive the cost of gas and electricity to an average of £1,977 a year and plunge millions of homes into fuel poverty.

Touching Papadopoulos Cookies Ad Goes Viral in Greece

A touching advertisement for Papadopoulos cookies which was created in honor of the company’s 100th anniversary has gone viral on social media in Greece.

For many Greeks, cookies are synonymous with Papadopoulos, as the country has created some of the most iconic and delicious treats in the country.

The advertisement opens with an ancestor of the Papadopoulos family leaving Istanbul for the port of Piraeus with her young children in 1922, the year of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, and the resulting population exchange between Greece and Turkey.

Behavioural scientists, including government advisers, and public health leaders say the huge drop in take-up in just one month is fuelled by the widespread belief that Boris Johnson flouted his own Covid rules.
