Fifty new cases of coronavirus confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, five on Ithaka.

Today's bank rate:
1 GBP = € 1.1598
1 USD = € 0.8616

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Thousands sign petition supporting driver who hit knife attacker

Thousands of people have signed a petition branding a driver who mowed down a knife attacker “a hero” and calling for him not to face criminal charges.

The 26-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder after ploughing into Leon McCaskre, 41, as he stabbed his ex-partner Yasmin Chkaifi to death in the street in front of horrified witnesses.

A number of people had desperately tried to stop McCaskre before the driver hit him with his blue Renault in Maida Vale west London on Monday morning.

Relatives of Ms Chkaifi, who had two sons, have reportedly also praised the driver for attempting to stop the fatal attack.

On Wednesday nearly 5,000 people had signed a petition on Change.org entitled: “Maida Vale driver is a hero and shouldn’t be charged with murder”.

Carer who suffocated suspected burglar during citizen's arrest cleared of manslaughter

A carer who suffocated a suspected burglar while performing a citizen's arrest has been cleared of manslaughter.

Nathan Smith, 38, knelt on 43-year-old Craig Wiltshire's back for nine minutes in the early hours of November 20 2019 after tackling him in the street.

He refused to ease off even when the victim twice told him he could not breathe, telling him "I don't give a s--- what you can and can't do".

Mr Wiltshire died in hospital two weeks later on Dec 4.

Smith denied wrongdoing, claiming he believed Mr Wiltshire was "pretending" to be in distress so he would release him and he could escape.

Boris Johnson personally authorised evacuation of Pen Farthing’s dogs from Afghanistan, email shows
Prime minister had previously claimed it was ‘complete nonsense’ that he intervened in the case

Boris Johnson personally authorised the evacuation of 173 dogs and cats from Afghanistan, according to a newly-released email that contradicts his claim to have had no role in the episode.

John Healey, Labour’s shadow defence secretary, said that the prime minister had “once again” been “caught out lying about what he has been doing and deciding”.

Greek prime minister faces calls to resign after snow chaos
Thousands of drivers were stuck on a motorway overnight for up to 20 hours as storm Elpis blew in

A severe snowstorm has battered Greece and its normally sun-soaked islands, sparking a political crisis, with the main opposition leader calling on conservative prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to resign after thousands of people were left trapped on a motorway.

The call by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras came after motorists, many of them senior citizens, called into radio and television stations, crying for help and assistance, after being stuck for up to 20 hours on Attiki Odos, a 65-kilometre (40-mile) motorway close to Athens.

The snowstorm hit on Monday night, causing chaos.

“Please, please, please,” cried Michalis, a 75-year-old driver, “Please, show us some mercy. Help us. We are freezing. We have been left without any petrol, nothing to tie us over.”

May have been fixed by now but a burst water pipe on the bridge from Poros through the gorge has led to a slippery road surface, drivers advised to beware.
