Remote island gets 24-hour electricity

And it's not a Greek island!

Quote
A remote British island has been given 24-hour electricity for the first time.

Fair Isle, a three-mile-long island halfway between Orkney and Shetland, previously had access to power only between 7.30am and 11.30pm via a wind turbine and diesel generators.

Now, a £3.5 million new renewable electricity system which went live on Friday means the 55 islanders will have a round-the-clock supply.

Pettigo: Irish village at centre of Brexit border conundrum

Brexit negotiations have continually stalled on the question of the Irish border.

When you visit the rural village of Pettigo, which straddles both the Republic and Northern Ireland, you can appreciate the difficulties.

Cut in half, a customs border once ran through people's gardens in Pettigo.

For Bridget Britton, her property runs over the two different countries.

"For me to go to my garden in the north, I would have to go from Eire to Northern Ireland," she tells ITV News.

"That's no bother now because the customs hut is closed, but if the customs hut was open I would have to report to them that I was going to go for my potatoes."

Ireland has more crossing points to monitor than the world's longest border between America and Canada.

Pizzas must shrink or lose their toppings under Government anti-obesity plan

Pizzas must shrink or lose their toppings under Government plans to cap the calories in thousands of meals sold in restaurants and supermarkets.

Pies, ready meals and sandwiches will also be subject to the new proposed calorie limits, in a desperate bid to tackle Britain’s obesity crisis.

More than a million UK residents live in 'food deserts', says study
Experts say areas with limited access to cheap fresh food are fuelling health problems

More than a million people in the UK live in “food deserts” – neighbourhoods where poverty, poor public transport and a dearth of big supermarkets severely limit access to affordable fresh fruit and vegetables, a study has claimed.

Nearly one in 10 of the country’s most economically deprived areas are food deserts, it says – typically large out-of-town housing estates and deprived inner-city wards served by a handful of small, relatively expensive corner shops.

Public health experts are concerned that these neighbourhoods – which are often also “food swamps” with high densities of fast-food outlets – are helping to fuel a rise in diet-related conditions such as obesity and diabetes, as well as driving food insecurity.

Economist who predicted financial crash warns Bitcoin is 'mother of all scams'

The economist who predicted the 2008 financial crash has warned American politicians that Bitcoin is “the mother of all scams” during a Senate hearing on cryptocurrency.

Nouriel Roubini, a fierce critic of virtual currency, took aim at the blockchain technology underpinning cryptocurrency, which is often hailed as transformative even by those cynical about digital coins.

Roubini added that the nickname “s---coins" which is often used by cryptocurrency traders when referring to less valuable coins, was “a grave insult to manure”.

Facebook: Most political trolls are American, not Russian

Facebook has banned hundreds of pages and accounts which it says were fraudulently flooding its site with partisan political content – although they came from the US instead of being associated with Russia.

The company said it had banned 559 pages and 251 accounts that were mostly controlled by Americans, including independent news websites with millions of followers.

Facebook's cybersecurity chief Nathaniel Gleicher said most fake activity on the site now appears to come from domestic hucksters trying to capitalise on political divisions rather than state agents.

Usain Bolt scores twice on first start for Australia's Central Coast Mariners

Usain Bolt has scored his first goals for a professional football team, getting two on his maiden start for Central Coast Mariners in a friendly.

The Jamaican eight-time Olympic sprint champion scored the Mariners' third and fourth goals in a 4-0 win over Macarthur South West and celebrated with his trademark lightning bolt pose.

The 100m and 200m world record holder has previously trained with Borussia Dortmund, South African club Sundowns and Norway's Stromsgodset.

He retired from athletics in 2017 and has since said it would be a "dream" to play professional football.

The Australian A-League season begins on 19 October and the Mariners are yet to confirm whether Bolt will be offered a contract.
