Australian man's petition to have Olympics Games moved permanently to Greece

The Olympics made a symbolic return to its birthplace in 2004 - but today its legacy is far from what organisers had hoped it would be when more than $16 billion was spent to create an event that the IOC promised would be the “best ever”.

Fast forward 15 years, and dramatic images show just how farfetched that claim was.

Facilities, which were miraculously completed with just hours to spare, were almost immediately forgotten after the closing ceremony.

His petition has so far received 70 signatures.

Angry father to sue TUI after his family apartment in Greece is downsized
David Stacey was told his family would have to squeeze into a one-bedroom apartment just 10 days before they are due to fly to Crete

He has now been informed by TUI that the downgrade was the result of the hotel not having any two-bedroom rooms available for his 10-day break in Elounda.

In addition he has not be offered any compensation despite getting less for his money.

Despite TUI sending out the email its website shows the firm is still selling two-bedroom family apartments.

Greek Tax Inspectors Discover Widespread Violations for Month of June

The findings of the AADE for the month of June revealed that fully 32 percent of the 7,700 businesses which were inspected that month had breached some tax laws in one way or another.

The main focus areas of the inspectors were three mainland cities and several popular islands, in both the Aegean and the Ionian Seas.

The area with the most tax violations for the month of June was the popular Ionian island of Corfu.

There, fully 60 percent of the businesses checked were found to be violating tax rules, with the Aegean island of Santorini not far behind in second place, with 56 percent of its businesses showing some sort of tax evasion or tax violation.

I passed the Athens site last year and it is indeed in a sorry state. Three cheers for London's Olympic venue, which is a lovely place to visit. The Velodrome and Swimming stadium are in constant use. A far cry from the Stratford railway works of my childhood!

Everton’s new ground poses a fundamental question: can football stadiums still serve the public good?

Bit different from Olympics stadiums. Quote that might be of interest: "it is one of the few Premier League clubs to pay its staff the Living Wage". Aye, well, there's not much money in the Premier League  :iroll:

People in Liverpool react to Liverpool FC's bid to trademark 'Liverpool'

An application by Liverpool FC to trademark the city's name to prevent unofficial football merchandise being has ruffled feathers.

The Champions League winning club says it wants to protect both its fans and itself from fake Liverpool goods being created by taking ownership of the name.

It says the rules would only be enforced in a football context, so road signs, businesses and tourist attractions wouldn't be affected.

One fan, not opposed to the idea, stated: "Chelsea have done it. Southampton have done it. Why not?"

Greece Referred to EU Court For Failing to Protect Natural Habitats and Species

The European Commission decided recently to refer Greece to the Court of Justice of the EU over its ”failure to protect biodiversity adequately”.

In its statement, the European Commission notes that while Greece has designated Special Areas of Conservation to protect natural habitats and species included in the ”Natura 2000” network, it has failed to establish the necessary conservation objectives and measures corresponding to the ecological requirements of the natural habitat types and of the species present in all these sites.

149 People Drowned in Greek Seas in the First Half of 2019

98 people drowned over the same period last year.

In total, 2018 was the worst year in Greece’s history in terms of drowning incidents, as 294 people died while they were swimming.

Experts say that if the trend of the first half of 2019 continues, it is highly likely that the record-high number of 2018 will be surpassed in 2019.
