Yes they were!! Certainly dirty and uncomfortable (inc the stations, mostly) - but probably more punctual and cheaper.  But now it's clear that they didn't have to be.  Diabolical is now used for Govia Trains, Northern Rail etc!!.  The east coast line was renationalised - twice! And Virgin Trains are soon to be no more!
