Kef fire risk 14/06/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8843 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1117 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1308 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8995 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Kavala: 7 months in prison for parents who beat their child when he told them he's gay

Two parents were sentenced to a 7-month suspended prison sentence by a court in Kavala for beating their gay child.

The criminal procedure was initiated against them after a complaint from their child. The two parents were charged with simple bodily harm to a vulnerable person and threatening a vulnerable person.

The reason for the episodic relationship, as stated during the trial, is that the underage child of the family declared to his parents that he is homosexual. Due to this, there were tensions in the family, resulting the child appealing to the court and the police for protection.

From his first complaints onwards, it was decided that everyone should visit a psychologist once a week, which continues.

Tragedy off Pylos: 59 migrants dead in fishing boat collision - 104 rescued

A fishing boat collided with a vessel carrying immigrants in international waters 47 nautical miles southwest of Pylos, leaving at least 59 dead and 104 rescued.

There is fear, however, that the number of dead will rise as concerns are expressed about migrants trapped in the holds of the fishing vessel.

According to Proto Thema, the migrants on board the fishing boat that sank under unclear circumstances so far were from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Palestine.

The migrants did not know how to swim, while none of the rescued people brought a life jacket, the outlet reported. The fishing vessel had started from Tobruk, Libya, and was bound for Italy.

It was first spotted at around 8pm on Tuesday. This is when the vessel was first approached by a Frontex boat and also by the Greek Coast Guard. Help was offered to the migrants as the boat was full.

The migrants aboard the boat reportedly refused the help offered to them and said they wanted to continue the journey to Italy.

A few hours later, however, and under so far unclear conditions - winds of 2-3 Beaufort were prevailing in the area, the boat capsised and sank after midnight.

Officials of the Coast Guard estimate that the number of such incidents will increase, since the number of migrants who, either from the Turkish coasts or from North Africa, travel mainly to Italy or Greece to head more easily to Central and Northern Europe increases.

The boats are old and many of them poorly maintained, while the number of passengers is much higher than allowed.

Homes stuck with millions of faulty smart meters in botched net zero rollout

Households have been saddled with three million faulty smart meters in a botched roll-out that is ballooning over budget, a report reveals today.

Nearly one in 10 smart energy meters installed in UK homes are not working properly and more than one in three homeowners have reported problems, the National Audit Office found.

It comes as the roll-out, which was supposed to have seen a smart meter installed in every home by 2020, is now forecast to cost more than £13.5bn.

Smart meters are replacing traditional gas and electric meters and send automatic readings to energy suppliers. Display screens also provide homeowners with real-time information about how much they are spending on power.

Suppliers told the NAO that they are finding it increasingly difficult to persuade customers to accept smart meters and that they had already plucked all the “low hanging fruit” of households who are willing to install the meters.

Athens amusement park shut over list of complaints

An amusement park in Athens that had been operating for 17 years without a license was shut down last month by the National Transparency Authority (EAD), it was announced on Tuesday.

The authority had issued an ex officio order to check the legality of the licensing and operation of the amusement park’s activity, and after a preliminary investigation of a complaint, it was found that its operating license was granted in 2006, and that it had long expired.

All change in electricity bills
Major modifications to be introduced from October 1, with state measures coming to an end

Electricity tariffs return to the regime of the readjustment clause from October 1, and the market’s regulator (RAAEY) is in a hurry to prevent phenomena that consumers painfully faced when the crisis began. Suppliers, for their part, are looking for pricing formulas to transfer wholesale market risk without having to risk a new crisis of confidence from their customers.

Therefore, the floating tariffs that will be available to consumers from October 1 will not have the words Adjustment Clause. But this does not mean that the price of a kilowatt-hour will not change according to the fluctuations of the wholesale market.

Synthetic human embryos created in groundbreaking advance
Exclusive: Breakthrough could aid research into genetic disorders but raises serious ethical and legal issues

Scientists have created synthetic human embryos using stem cells, in a groundbreaking advance that sidesteps the need for eggs or sperm.

Scientists say these model embryos, which resemble those in the earliest stages of human development, could provide a crucial window on the impact of genetic disorders and the biological causes of recurrent miscarriage.

However, the work also raises serious ethical and legal issues as the lab-grown entities fall outside current legislation in the UK and most other countries.

The structures do not have a beating heart or the beginnings of a brain, but include cells that would typically go on to form the placenta, yolk sac and the embryo itself.
