Dozens of Greek police have taken part in an operation to clear an apartment used as the headquarters of a rebel monastery whose monks have been declared schismatic by the Orthodox Church.

Police said one monk and five supporters were in the apartment in Thessaloniki during the raid early Friday, which followed a court decision for the eviction. Riot police blocked off surrounding blocks to prevent other supporters from hindering the operation.

Monks from the 1,000-year-old Esphigmenou Monastery, in the self-governed Mount Athos monastic community near Thessaloniki in northern Greece, are in a bitter dispute with the Istanbul-based Ecumenical Patriarch, spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians.

They accuse the patriarch of treason for seeking better relations with the Catholic Church.

UK consumer patching practices have worsened still further over the last three months, increasing the threat of malware problems, according to a new study by IT security provider Secunia.

Secunia estimates 12.6 per cent of UK users are running unpatched operating systems, up from 9.7 per cent the previous quarter. In addition, one in 10 third-party programs on the average PC are exposed due to failures in installing the latest security updates.

Greece, Champion of Electricity Hikes

An increase in energy costs of over 60 percent has been recorded in Greece during the last six years of the financial crisis (2008-2013).

In absolute numbers however, the cost of energy in Greece remains in the average of the European Union countries’ levels, with Denmark being on top of the list. A household with an annual consumption of 4,000 kWh pays 1,221 euros in Denmark... and 698 euros in Greece, which is placed in the 14th position among the 28 countries of the Eurozone.

Greece: Free food for 5,000 people prepared with ugly vegetables

Free meals for 5,000 people will be prepared using fresh produce that did not reach the market. The event will take place on Sunday, 9 November, from 11 am to 4 pm at the White Tower of Thessaloniki.

The meal will be prepared by the Association of Chefs of Thessaloniki. The fresh vegetables and fruits used had been discarded either because they were in surplus, or because they had a bad appearance, such as crooked carrots, aubergines and potatoes.

Fantastic !  A little common sense and food is used for the purpose it was cultivated for. Can't remember the last time I noticed the taste difference between my bent carrot and knobbly spud and Tescos finest. If it also helps to keep the big boy's in check and stops the price manipulation across the food chain all well and good. The vegetables in the Tesco accounts dept may want to take heed !

I haven't shopped in any of the big supermarkets for years.  One of the, few, benefits of living in Brum is the many ethnic shops that have no compunction in selling ugly fruit and veg which have far better flavours and are cheaper.  I'm sure the same applies in other parts of the UK.
