‘Beckett’ Is the First Netflix Movie Shot Entirely in Greece

The newest Netflix movie filmed in Greece, categorized as an action thriller, is sure to keep audiences at the edge of their seats while still providing beautiful Greek scenery.

The synopsis reads, “While vacationing in Greece, Beckett (John David Washington), an American tourist, becomes the target of a manhunt after a devastating accident. Forced to run for his life and desperate to reach the U.S. Embassy in Athens to clear his name, tensions escalate as the authorities close in, political unrest mounts, and Beckett falls even deeper into a dangerous web of conspiracy.”

Up to eighteen international movies will be shot in Greece in 2021, confirming the industry’s demand for the country’s nearly endless variety of stunning landscapes and stunning historic monuments.

Huge Hollywood movie productions such as “Knives Out 2,” which stars Greek-Filipino actor Dave Bautista and “James Bond” actor Daniel Craig, are set to film in Greece this year.

A movie about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s life, titled “Greek Freak,” has also just wrapped filming in the center of Athens.

Antonio Banderas and Kate Bosworth are just some of the world famous actors who are now filming in Thessaloniki, Greece for a star-studded movie with the working title “The Enforcer.”

Greece: crowds watch streets turned into Miami scenery for new Antonio Banderas movie

The streets of Thessaloniki in Greece were transformed into a Miami scene for the needs of the film "The Enforcer" starring Antonio Banderas. Impressed by the Hollywood atmosphere, hundreds rushed to watch production crews making the necessary conversions for the filming. American flags, traffic signs and huge palm trees are placed all along the street, accompanied by dozens of American vehicles and "Miami Beach" patrol cars parked on the set.

Hot Spots: How Greece Has Emerged As A Top Location For Hollywood & Foreign Productions

As global producers continue to grapple with the logistics of filming in a Covid-safe world, Greece has emerged as one of the most attractive destinations for international film and television crews to set up camp. Thanks to the government’s prompt response to pandemic protocols after the hard lockdown last year coupled with an increase in financial and tax incentives, the European nation is in the throes of one of its biggest production seasons to date, with a raft of local and international projects all taking advantage of the nation’s beautiful and diverse locations.

Indeed, Daniel Craig and the starry ensemble cast of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 2 are currently filming on the Greek upscale island of Spetses (close to Athens) for Netflix while Millennium Media’s noir thriller The Enforcer with Antonio Banderas and Kate Bosworth is shooting in Thessaloniki, for a Miami-set script. Apple TV Plus’ series Tehran is shooting its second season in the territory and David Cronenberg’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Crimes of the Future is expected to begin shooting in the country next month.

Production companies pick Greece for filming

A rider on a roaring motorcycle eludes his pursuers on the deck of a Greek-made warship? Thankfully it’s fiction, a scene from the action adventure “The Expendables 4,” starring Jason Statham, Megan Fox, Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren and due to start shooting in Greece on October 30, according to producer Robert Van Norden. And the ship? It’s the work of a team of Thessaloniki prop builders and part of the outdoor set constructed by Millennium Media on a privately owned 8.3-hectare plot in the northern port city’s Thermi suburb.

According to sources, the American production company will also be building what will be Greece’s first Hollywood-standards studio in 2022.
