Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8870 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1273 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1111 USD   $1 USD = 0.9000 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.6946 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5901 €UR
1 €UR = R21.6164 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0462 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Cash transactions of over 500 euros to carry hefty fines

Taxpayers, such as property buyers, who insist on breaking the law by conducting cash payments in excess of 500 euros each are facing fines, which can reach up to twice the value of the transaction, as the provisions of the new tax law have come into force.

The new law also prohibits the purchase of property with cash, and the entire transaction must be done through a bank.

Number of small budget hotels dwindling

Three in four Greek hotels belong in lower categories of one to three stars, representing 50% of the country’s total capacity in terms of rooms, according to data from the Institute of Tourism Research and Forecasts (ITEP) of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels.

More specifically, Greece has  210,000 one-, two- and three-star hotels, which account for 74% of the total number of units and 47% of the country’s rooms. What’s more, the number of small budget hotels is declining, especially in the lower two categories, as units are either closed down, sold or in some cases upgraded by their owners, usually using their own capital, as bank credit tends to be hard to come by for such small businesses. In fact, according to ITEP’s report, the number of two-star hotels decreased by 28% and one-star hotels by 20% in the 2013-2023 period.

Kotsovolos electronics retailer slapped with 2 mln euro fine

Electronics and appliances retailer Kotsovolos, one of the country’s biggest of its kind, has been slapped with a fine of 2 million euros for misleading discounts at its online store.

According to Development Minister Kostas Skrekas on Thursday, an inspection of the business, which is owned by Dixons, revealed that it had been advertising hefty discounts on a range of products, without, however, listing the original price so that consumers knew exactly what they were getting.

More than 300,000 people expected to be homeless in England over Christmas

Homelessness levels in England this Christmas are expected to be 14% higher than last year, new analysis has shown.

The charity Shelter said that on any given night in 2023 an estimated 309,550 people were in some form of homelessness - the majority of whom were in temporary accommodation.

England's out of control housing crisis has been blamed for the trend. ITV News has previously reported how the situation has now pushed a record number of children out of their homes and onto the streets.

Alex Batty: Teen from Oldham missing for six years found in France

A 17-year-old British boy from Oldham who went missing in Spain in 2017 has been found in France, authorities say.

Alex Batty was found in the town of Revel, east of Toulouse, early on Wednesday morning.

The prosecutor's office in Toulouse told the BBC the family had confirmed the teenager's identity.

Alex had been missing for six years after going on holiday with his mother and grandfather.

The mother and grandfather, who do not have parental guardianship of Alex, have not been located but remain wanted in connection with his disappearance.

Alex is currently being looked after by social services, awaiting the arrival of British police and consular staff who are on their way to bring him back to England.

My brother had a cat, Basil, who enjoyed doing this. It became a party piece after my brother threw some crumpled
paper into a waste bin but missed, Basil ran across the room, picked it up and brought it back to my brother. His particular
favourite was fetching crumpled balls of coloured wrapping paper. Basil also had a meow that sounded like he was saying "Helloo"
