Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8835 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1318 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1206 USD   $1 USD = 0.8975 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7120 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5841 €UR

Based on National Bank of Greece exchange rates.
Other banks likely to offer rates which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g. the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Post Office confirms boss is under investigation

The Post Office has confirmed that its current boss, Nick Read, is under investigation, after its former chairman Henry Staunton shocked MPs by making the revelation.

Mr Staunton was at a hearing to discuss compensation payments to sub-postmasters at the centre of the Horizon scandal.

The MPs had been told by witnesses earlier in the day that an internal investigation was under way into Mr Staunton over his alleged behaviour while he chaired the company.

However, Mr Staunton alleged that there was actually an investigation into Mr Read.

Buyers seek out quiet spots

The Greek property market is this year observing a shift of foreign holiday home buyers to areas that are less popular, but at the same time do not lag behind in natural beauty – quite the opposite.

According to a relevant analysis by Elxis – At Home in Greece, which specializes in the field of holiday homes, this trend is likely to become dominant during 2024. Areas that are unknown to the general public and offer mild tourism development and therefore more peace and quiet, are developing into hot spots for foreign buyers.

...two main regions of the country stand out. The first is the northwest side from Preveza to Igoumenitsa and further south to Palairos and Mytikas in Aitoloakarnania – i.e. the entire part of the mainland that is on the Ionian Sea. The second area of interest is the southern part of Rethymnon and in general the southern side of Crete, which is clearly less developed for tourism than the northern part of the island.

Incomes still haven’t recovered

This year may be the sixth since Greece’s emergence from the bailout mechanism, but the return of incomes to pre-2010 levels is far from being a reality.

One in three households has a monthly income of up to 1,450 euros, when the corresponding ratio in 2008 was about one in four, while now only 11.46% of households have a monthly income of more than €3,500, a percentage that in 2008 was double.

Road taxes 2024: Tomorrow is the deadline for payment

The deadline for the payment of road taxes, as well as for placing vehicles in immobilization, expires tomorrow, Wednesday February 29th, after the two-month extension granted by the Ministry of National Economy & Finance.

The process is as follows:

• Access the platform and select “LOG IN TO THE APPLICATION.”
• Enter your Taxisnet codes and click CONNECT.
• Select “Vehicle Road Taxes.”
• Choose “Vehicle Road Tax Notifications.”
• Confirm that the personal Tax number (ΑΦΜ) and the year (2023) displayed are correct, then enter the vehicle registration number.
• Click on “Vehicle Road Tax Notification” to save the file on your mobile or computer, where you can then print it.

There is also a second method without using TAXIS codes. In this case, you need your personal Tax (ΑΦΜ) number and the vehicle registration number.

UK’s most dangerous inmate Hannibal the Cannibal has been in a glass box for 40 years

He has spent the last decades complaining about his conditions, at one point penning a series of open letters to the press begging for classical music tapes, a TV, pictures, and a pet budgie – promising he would ‘not eat it’.

Post Office sought double pay for chief executive

The former chairman of the Post Office twice asked for boss Nick Read's pay to be doubled, MPs heard on Wednesday.

Henry Staunton was trying to prevent Mr Read from quitting the scandal-hit organisation.

However, the requests were refused, Post Office minister Kevin Hollinrake said in response to an urgent question in the House of Commons.

It comes as hundreds of sub-postmasters wait for compensation as the long-running Horizon IT scandal continues.

Nick Read became chief executive of the Post Office in 2019 as the organisation dealt with the fall-out and declining revenues.

The latest figures show his salary for 2022-23 stood at £573,000, including bonuses. The year before, he earned £816,000, of which £415,000 was salary and the rest bonus.
