Four-tier VAT status for islands

Tourists and foreign tour operators could be forgiven for being confused about the value-added taxes applying on Greece’s islands after the new tax measures are voted into law on Wednesday night by Parliament.

Agreement helps tourism bookings recover

Holiday cancellations have been stemmed and last-minute bookings have started to recover from most foreign markets for the rest of the tourism season after the government’s agreement with its creditors on Monday, the head of the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (SETE), Andreas Andreadis, said on Tuesday.

Heard that, as part of 'the agreement', payment for items over 70€ will only be legal by credit / debit card on islands with over a population of over 4,100 residents, e.g. Kef. Doesn't apply to payments by public entities.

Tour operator Hellas Travel has decided to cancel all its scheduled flights from Groningen Airport Eelde to Greece. According to the company, the economic situation in Greece has resulted in too few bookings and the weekly flight to the country is no longer feasible.

Hellas Travel flew from Groningen Airport Eelde to Corfu once a week, according to RTL Nieuws.

The Energy Ministry had received three bids for the concession of licenses for the surveying and utilization of hydrocarbons in 20 areas in the Ionian Sea and south of Crete by Tuesday’s deadline, although the capital controls do not allow for the publication of the companies’ names and the areas they are interested in.

How the Greek crisis is making your Sunday lunch cheaper
UK lamb prices are down by almost a quarter over the last year as the euro suffers under the weight of the political situation in Greece

British lamb producers sold a kilogram of lamb for £3.50 this week, which is down from £4.11 a month ago and is more than a pound less than the same week last year.

While the euro's depreciation is good news for British holiday makers heading to the continent, it has made UK exports to the currency bloc more expensive and therefore knocked demand from European buyers, meaning that prices have fallen here at home.

This pressure on prices is particularly pronounced in the lamb market, as the UK is largest producer of lamb in Europe, and Europe is the UK's most important market, accounting for more than 80pc of its lamb exports in April.

Britain gets 'slap in the face' as Brussels defies Cameron opposition over Greek loans
European Commission will use €7bn from an EU bail-out fund for Greece, as Tsipras says banks might not reopen for months

David Cameron is probbaly smarting from Brussels decision to ignore his opposition over emergency loans for Greece. Today in the Commons, he's come out against his European partners and in support of the IMF

The PM told MPs that he agrees with the IMF that Greece needs debt relief.

From Steven Swinford at PMQs:

"Mr Cameron said that if Greece does leave the eurozone, Britain should provide humanitarian assistance.

He said: "We all feel for the Greek people who have had a very difficult time and with no early signs of relief on the way. We talk to the IMF on a very regular basis. The point they are making that there needs to be debt relief for Greece must be right. Frankly it is in our interests for the Eurozone to resolve these issues. They need to resolve these issues and they need to resolve them quite fast.

"Greece is a member of the EU as well as a member of the euro. It is a friend and ally of Britain. As a member of the EU, if Greece were to leave the euro and wanted humanitarian assistance I'm sure the British public would take a generous view."

Bit of - rather late - news: looks like Adobe Reader is now (well, since April) Adobe Acrobat Reader DC:

Quote
Adobe Acrobat Reader DC software is the free, trusted standard for viewing, printing, signing, and annotating PDFs. It's the only PDF viewer that can open and interact with all types of PDF content – including forms and multimedia. It’s connected to Adobe Document Cloud – so you can work with PDFs on computers and mobile devices.

I stopped using the bulky beast years ago and connecting it to the cloud is no enticement back!

"Yes, they fit nicely, I'll take this pair of shoes please"

"Thank you Sir. This left one is €36, and this right one is....€36 also. You'll be paying separately, yes?"
