Kef fire risk 18/06/22: Low

Sixteen new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, two on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8812 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0712 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1348 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9335 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Black Vulture Killed After Flying Into Wind Turbine Blades In Northern Greece

A black vulture (Aegypius monachus) was killed after flying onto the blades of a wind turbine installed at a Natura 2000 protected park in northern Greece, the Management Unit of Evros Delta & Dadia National Parks said on Friday.

The incident occured in the Filiouri Valley, north of the settlement of Nea Santa at Rodopi prefecture, and it was recorded by the cameras of the wind turbine’s bird collision prevention system.

The black vulture had been named Hector and was tagged in 2018 when it was still a chick. It carried a special transmitter since October 2021 that is necessary for scientific monitoring.

This incident “confirms our concerns about the impact of installing wind farms in areas that are natural habitats for birds,” noted biologist Sylvia Zakkak of the Natural Environment & Climate Change Agency.

From 01 July residents in Greece will be able to register with a 'personal doctor' (GP) via their local pharmacist, who will have a list of local doctors.

Not joining personal doctor scheme carries penalty

A ministerial decision published on Friday details the counterincentives designed to encourage citizens to register with the new personal doctor scheme, an initiative seeking to streamline primary healthcare and referrals for specialist consultations and tests in the National Health System (ESY).

Starting on October 1, insured individuals who have not signed up for the new service will have to pay 10% more for prescribed medicines, diagnostic tests and procedures, for treatment at a private medical center and for all other services provided by the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (EOPYY). Those costs will go up another 10% on January 1 if the insured individual still fails to comply with the new rules.

Under the new scheme, each person insured with EOPYY signs up with a local general practitioner or pathologist who will be their first point of contact for any health complaints or issues.

Second World War bike maker Norton to build electric motorcycles in Britain

A 124-year-old British motorcycle brand that supplied the military during the Second World War and counts Keanu Reeves among its fans will build its new electric motorcycles in the UK after securing support from the Government.

The Government has committed £8.5m to Norton Motorcycles to help fund development of its new vehicles in the UK.

It was known for its racing bikes in the post-war years, with a close association to the Isle of Man TT race. Famous past owners included Steve McQueen, although it was a Triumph he rode in the film The Great Escape.

Norton typically builds bulky, chrome-clad motorcycles and the Norton Interpol was used as a police cruiser in the 1980s.

Drug smugglers deliver £68 million worth of cocaine to supermarkets by mistake
Workers unpacking Colombian bananas shipments find rather unexpected surprise amid crates

Cocaine worth almost £70m has been seized by police – after it was mistakenly delivered to supermarkets in banana shipments.

Workers in stores across the Czech Republic discovered the drug as they unpacked crates of the fruit, which are thought to have come from Colombia.

In total, some 2,200lb of the drug – with a street value of around £68m – was found moulded in cubes around the bananas, police in the central European country said.
