Kef fire risk 03/09/23: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8829 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1194 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1326 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8933 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Microsoft is killing WordPad in Windows after 28 years

Microsoft announced today that it will deprecate WordPad with a future Windows update as it's no longer under active development, though the company did not specify the precise timing of this change.

WordPad is a basic text-editing application that allows users to create and edit documents with formatted text and include images and links to other files.

It is automatically installed on Windows systems starting in 1995 since Windows 95 was released, providing users with a basic word processor and document editor integrated into the operating system.

The company now suggests the Microsoft Word app as a replacement for WordPad users and Notepad for those who don't need rich text support.

Five years ago, Microsoft also announced that the classic Windows Paint application would be deprecated and removed with the release of the Windows 10 Fall Creator's Update in July 2017.

However, following an outpour of love for the app, Redmond decided not to completely kill it, instead making it available through the Microsoft Store.

The company also officially began killing off the Cortana voice-based assistant in Windows 11 Canary preview builds released in early August 2023.

The app's spot as a Windows digital assistant has already been filled by the AI-powered Windows Copilot unveiled during this year's Build conference.

Greeks becoming fewer, older, lonelier
Population shrinks by 3.1% compared to a decade ago, while people over 80 steadily increasing

Greek society is aging and experiencing great changes in its structural characteristics, according to the results of the 2021 population census, which were released on Friday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority.

More specifically, the permanent population of Greece is 10,482,487 people, down by 3.1% compared to 10 years earlier.

At the same time, the number of people over 80 is constantly increasing, reaching 766,043, compared to the previous census data of 583,333 people over 80.

One in three people in the country is over 60. Similarly, there has been a decrease in the number of young children up to 9 years old, who now number 878,491 from 1,049,839 in the previous census.

What’s more, single-person households are increasing, divorce and separation are on the rise, and cohabitation is becoming increasingly popular.

Migrants, who could play an important role in societies with a strong demographic problem such as Greece, are leaving.

Indicatively there are a total of 765,598 foreign nationals legally residing in Greece, down 16.1% on the previous census. Most of those who have moved are Albanians who have sought better jobs in Italy and England.

In a strange coincidence in the past year I have have met and had appointments with 2 Greek health professionals who have been here several years, one fromThesalloniki and the other from near to Athens and a new neighbour also from Thesalloniki, seems like North London is the place to go to for Greeks. Must be all the Greek bakeries & patisseries that have popped up recently  :nai:. Also 2 of the 3 are gay men.
