Kef fire risk 10/10/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8912 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0847 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1221 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9219 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

New rules planned for beach concessions to businesses

The competent services of the National Economy and Finance Ministry are reportedly preparing new legislation concerning the framework governing the leasing of areas on beaches and coasts by tourist enterprises.

The objective is to improve coast protection, the general reputation of Greek tourism, as well as the unrestricted access to beaches of people in accordance with the Constitution.

Currys mulls offers from 'several' suitors of Greece-based Kotsovolos chain

Currys PLC said it is mulling offers for its Greek business from "several" potential buyers but it is still not certain whether a sale will go ahead.

The electrical products retailer launched a strategic review back in June to consider all options for the Kotsovolos chain, which operates around 90 stores across Greece and Cyprus, and is “performing and profitable”.

Total farce that landed gran in court for breaking £3 box of eggs ‘with intent’

A grandmother has been hauled to court for breaking a box of eggs ‘with intent’ during a fight with her mum.

Alissa Ash, 59, got into an argument in the kitchen with her 89-year-old mum Ann-Marie Ash, during which she threw a £3 box of eggs on the floor.

But the matter ended up in court after Ms Ash reportedly refused to accept a caution from police – with the case thought to have cost the taxpayer as much as £1,000 in legal and court costs.

Magistrate James Barber said: ‘I’m struggling to find any criminality other than breaking a few eggs. I do that every time I make breakfast.’

He handed her an absolute discharge.

The case was heard even despite reservations from Mrs Ash, the supposed victim, telling reporters outside the court that her daughter’s prosecution was ‘a waste of time’.

British expats locked out of pensions by Brexit rules
Customers scramble to access their savings amid reduction in cross-border services

Most pension providers can only pay into a UK bank account, however lenders have stopped serving many overseas customers, leaving them scrambling to access their savings.

Retirees are also struggling to move pensions into drawdown, buy annuities and make changes to their contributions as post-Brexit rules mean pension providers are less likely to offer cross-border services.

Under HM Revenue and Customs rules, in order to transfer to a new British provider, customers need to be resident in the UK, meaning expats cannot move their pensions to a new company.

This means many pensioners face expensive and complicated overseas pension transfers, which can see them lose up to 25pc of their pot to tax, in order to get their money.

The motorcyclist killed this morning in an accident in Erissos has been named as Anastasis Baltsavias, a Patras butcher shop owner who also ran a butchers shop near Fiskardo.

Hunting dogs tear fox to shreds and kill it as huntsman watches on

A fox was eaten alive and killed by a pack of hunting dogs during a hunt despite a law banning the activity 18 years ago.

It happened at the Idlicote House Estate in Warwickshire on Monday.

Video footage filmed by anti-hunt protesters shows the horrific moment the fox was torn to shreds by the pack of dogs.

The terrified fox can be seen fleeing across some fields as hunt members give chase, before it dashes into hedgerow where the dogs finally kill it.

During the fox’s final moments, a huntsman on horseback watches before he eventually gets off, picks up the fox’s bloody corpse, and walks away.
