Ambulance fleet in need of renewal

Greece’s ambulance service, known as EKAB, has 620 vehicles but 130 are out of commission and cannot be repaired, Parliament heard on Thursday.

MPs were briefed by EKAB chief Nikos Papaefstathiou, who said that the majority of ambulances were bought in 2003 but that some date back to 1984. He said that some ambulances clock up to 70,000 kilometers a year while some of the older ones have more than 1 million kilometers on their clocks.

He said it costs 2 million euros a year to service the ambulance fleet.

Only 620 ambulances if they're all working!  I would have thought a fleet of 100 for Athens would have been a bit low.  What happens if you have a car crash out in the sticks.  (Rare in Greece, I know  .  Having said that some &%£*$ very nearly hit us coming fast round a very sharp bend on the wrong side of the road on the edge of Liverpool the other day.    )

Perhaps the Greeks could have all of the ambulances that will be mothballed in the UK because of the attempt by the Tories to change the NHS into something resembling the health system enjoyed by our American cousins?

A protein which ‘turbo-charges’ the immune system so that it can fight off any cancer or virus has been discovered by scientists.

In a breakthrough described as a ‘game-changer’ for cancer treatment, researchers at Imperial College found a previously unknown molecule which boosts the body’s ability to fight off chronic illnesses.

Scientists at Imperial College London, who led the study, are now developing a gene therapy based on the protein and hope to begin human trials in three years.

Allegedly the ex-Strintzis ferry Eptanisos has been sold to Fast Ferries and will be renamed Fast Ferries Andros. Looks likely it will be plying the Rafina-Andros-Tinos-Mykonos route, or thereabouts.
