The Night Manager final episode - a superb climax

Without wishing to play the spoilsport, this was not John le Carré’s idea of an ending.

Thought it was pretty gripping. Quite a happy ending  :hmm:

Of course there is going to be a sequel.  You didn't see the baddy get killed only taken away by other baddies.  So, Shite Mangy II  hitting your screens next winter when pretty pictures of hot places will appeal the most.

Car-scrapping plan extended to May 20

The government has decided to extend its vehicle-scrapping scheme, in which it subsidizes the new car purchases of owners who take their old vehicles off the roads, until May 20, although the subsidy will be cut by 50 percent from last year.

RSPCA acted wrongly when it seized and destroyed family's pet cat, official report concludes

Claude, a 16-year-old cat, was taken away from the Byrnes family and put down against their wishes by the animal welfare charity

The RSPCA has been accused of acting unlawfully after seizing a family’s pet cat - which was then put down against the owners’ wishes – in an official review which described the charity’s actions as a “travesty”.

The 16-year-old Turkish Van, named Claude, was taken away from Richard and Samantha Byrnes by RSPCA inspectors after a neighbour raised concerns about the animal’s appearance.

Now an official review conducted by Stephen Wooler, the former HM Chief Inspector to the Crown Prosecution Service, found the RSPCA had failed to disclose material to the Byrnes in a subsequent animal cruelty prosecution.

Mr Wooler concluded Claude had been removed without lawful authority and there appeared to have been no explicit consent by the owners, nor authorisation from the police.

The RSPCA last year issued a public apology to Mr and Mrs Byrnes of Tring, Hertfordshire, for what it admitted was “disproportionate and insensitive” conduct which had caused “unnecessary distress to the whole family”.

Sara-Lise Howe, the couple's lawyer, said that the RSPCA had unlawfully usurped their rights and made a "disgraceful attempt to besmirch the Byrnes' reputation in the press in order to salvage their own".

MPs are currently holding an inquiry into the charity's role in prosecuting 80 per cent of animal welfare cases in England and Wales.

Well now, Hugh Laurie played a damn fine Richard Roper (IMO, anyway) but Rowan Atkinson as Jules Maigret...  :hmm:

Quote
Rowan Atkinson stars as the Parisian detective in the first of a new occasional run of dramas based on the novels of Georges Simenon. The summer of 1955 finds Paris in the grip of both sweltering heat and terror on the streets. Four women have been murdered in Montmartre, with no apparent connection between the victims. Chief Inspector Maigret comes under huge pressure from the public and his superiors to apprehend the killer before he can strike again.

Today, 21:00-23:00 on ITV.

I can just about remember the Rupert Davies version in the sixties... or, more accurately, the theme tune:

I do not understand your comment regarding films made  in Birmingham but, passing that by, I did see the end of the programme and I have checked it again on iplayer.  Unless we were shown an edited version, Roper was "hijacked" by the people to whom he sold the arms andunless Roper's kicking out was to be taken as his death throes he was not killed at the end of the episode.  The intention was, no doubt, that you would assume that he was thus leaving it open for a sequel.

"Rowan Atkinson as Jules Maigret...  :hmm:"

I spent two hours watching Maigret last night.  I could have  watched paint dry and felt that I had spent my time in a better way.  I have rarely seen a more wooden performance than that perpetrated by Rowan Atkinson.  Even worse than Tom Hiddlestone!

I thought Laurie's portrayal of Roper was excellent. It might be difficult for his kidnappers to retrieve their missing millions from a corpse so yes, a possible re-appearance in the rumoured return.

Maigret was more Miss Marple than James Bond. Michael Kitchen proved a thoughtful detective can be entertaining in Foyle's War but Maigret managed to made Brenda Blethyn's Vera look more credible. Not sure how much was down to Rowan Atkinson and how much down to the scriptwriters. It did rather plod along.

Talking of plod, I think WPC 56 deserved better than the afternoon slot it was allotted. More entertaining than Maigret (and Vera) and, being set in Birmingham, no pretty pictures of hot places. All JMO.
