Land register to get back on track as tender is launched

Τhe company responsible for drawing up the Greek land register, the National Cadastre & Mapping Agency (EKHA), has launched a tender for the final phase of the project, budgeted at 465 million euros and set to be completed by 2020.

The project is expected to cost the state 399 million euros over the next four years, the bulk of which – 148.6 million euros – will be tacked onto the 2019 budget.

Greece is the only country in the EU without a cadastre. The registration of all land and properties in the country was meant to be completed by 2008 but has been repeatedly delayed by mix-ups, red tape and disputes.

Interesting short article on the BBC website, thought I'd find a snippet about Greece and would be able to post in Greek history and Culture but, No! Still interesting, though, with some (not so) bright ideas from the UK: Can pay, won't pay: Tax avoidance throughout history

Delightful article - thanks Maik.  Shows that the ingenuity of governments in finding new ways to raise revenue is almost limitless, as are the ways people find of trying of avoid them*.  Includes my now fave word "shunpiking" - the practice of taking a detour to avoid paying road tolls.  Now that the new Runcorn bridge over the Mersey is well under way and both the new and even (horror!) the old bridge will be tolled this will now grow in local significance!

*Though not until relatively recently the scams used to remove vast tranches of income out of the country.
