Protest on Zakynthos over island’s landfill problem, closed operating theatres

Thousands of Zakynthos islanders came out in protest in the island’s main town on Wednesday morning, demonstrating against the ongoing failure to address a months-long waste disposal problem and the continued closure of operating theatres in Zakynthos hospital, which have not reopened since the death of a woman in December 2016.

Greek militants claim parcel bomb sent to German ministry

A Greek far-left group on Thursday claimed it sent a parcel bomb to the German finance ministry, over six years after waging a similar campaign against European officials.

"We claim responsibility for sending a booby-trapped parcel to the German finance minister," the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei group said in a statement posted on an anti-establishment website.

A Greek police source said the claim was "most probably" authentic.

German police on Wednesday said they had discovered the "explosive" package at Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble's office building.

Only heard a garbled story but seems someone torched the Galapoulata-Markoulata house belonging to the grandfather (presumably deceased) of Alexandros Parisis, mayor of Kefalonia.

Data show spike in people renouncing inheritance to avoid taxes

An increasing number of people are turning their backs on properties they have inherited to avoid paying the higher taxes that accompany them, according to new data from the country’s courts which show that applications for renunciation of property rose 86.4 percent last year compared to 2013.

Most of those who filed documents last year to renounce their inheritance did so in the country’s major cities, with 11,655 applications recorded in Athens, 5,563 in Thessaloniki, 1,938 in Piraeus and 1,473 in Patra.

People are not only giving up family houses and apartments but also plots of lands.

2 Pussy Riot members at Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens this month

Two of the members of Russia's controversial Pussy Riot rock group will be in Athens later this month for an appearance at the Onassis Cultural Centre.

The event, entitled "Who is Afraid of Pussy Riot?", offers an opportunity for the Athenian public to meet the Russian feminists and activists "who were sentenced to prison after their performance 'Punk Prayer' in Moscow’s cathedral," according to the centre's website.
