English wine producers celebrate record turnover from past year

Although not traditionally viewed as serious competition to more established wine-growing regions, English wine has become a major growth industry in recent years.

In May 2017, Norfolk-based Winbirri Vineyards’ Bacchus 2015 wine was named the world’s best white wine in the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards.

Although the UK’s climate is inhospitable to producing quality red wine, the south of England has established a reputation for sparkling white wine. French champagne house Taittinger recently planted a vineyard in Kent, the county that is home to England’s leading winemaker Chapel Down.

Terror advice video for holidaymakers shows hotel attack

A video advising UK holidaymakers what to do in the event of a terror attack abroad has been released by police.

The four-minute film depicts a firearms attack unfolding at a hotel and uses the "run, hide, tell" safety message.

Foreign Office minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon said: "While there is no specific information that British holidaymakers will be targeted this summer, it sets out some simple steps we can all take to minimise the impact of an attack if one does take place."

An argument over a selfie may have led to the death of a 22-year-old American in Greece.

Bakari Henderson was killed after a fight broke out early Friday. Witnesses say he and his friends wanted to take a photo with the waitress, which angered one of the bouncers.

Police say at least 10 people followed Henderson out of the bar, including the bouncer and another employee. They are accused of beating Henderson and leaving him unconscious in the street.

Eight people have been arrested and are now facing voluntary manslaughter charges.

Probably no great surprise at all, what might be a surprise is that Germany is trailing down the bottom, not that far above Greece (see chart in link above).

A new cache of 25 Roman letters has been found at Vindolanda, the fort below Hadrian’s Wall where the most famous documents from the Roman world were discovered in 1992, first-person accounts of cold feet, beer running short, and jolly birthday parties at the northernmost edge of the empire.
