Voracious beetle kills swathes of Greek forest

Greek authorities are felling large parts of a forest because of a seemingly unstoppable beetle munching its way through trees.

Experts say the shiny black beetle, the Tomicus Piniperda, is having a devastating effect on trees in the Seih Sou forest in the hills overlooking Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city.

The beetle, which was first documented in Greece in the 1970s, has a preference for members of the conifer family, particularly pine, the European spruce and the European larch.

The impact of the beetle is evident. Large swathes of the pine forest have turned brown, with experts assessing that up to one tenth, or 100,000 trees, have been affected.

Also known as the common pine shoot beetle.

Apparently the Ionian Islands Regional Council has approved a budget of 300,000€ for provision and erection of new/replacement safety barriers on Kef roads. No mention of where.

Holiday homes are rapidly becoming the hottest property on the Greek real estate market this year, if the soaring asking prices recorded by property ads website Spitogatos are anything to go by.

Ithaca (2,465 euros/sq.m., up 13.1 percent).

On the other hand, there are islands that have seen their rates head south.

Not sure what would happen to the electricity supply if/when ΔΕΗ goes bust.

Jumpin' Jack's back: Mick Jagger appears healthy as Rolling Stones return to stage

The godfathers of rock 'n' roll have returned to the stage with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger appearing as healthy and energetic as ever following heart surgery.

The 75-year-old rocker ran and skipped along a narrow stage that jutted out into the crowd as the Stones launched their North American tour at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

It was his first major concert performance since doctors told him just three months ago he required medical treatment and needed to postpone the tour.

Rogue slug blamed for Japanese railway chaos

A power cut that disrupted rail traffic on a Japanese island last month was caused by a slug, officials say.

More than 12,000 people's journeys were affected when nearly 30 trains on Kyushu shuddered to a halt because of the slimy intruder's actions.

Its electrocuted remains were found lodged inside equipment next to the tracks, Japan Railways says.

The wrong type of slug?
