Receipts to be made more attractive for taxpayers

The Finance Ministry is planning to offer a 30 percent exemption from taxable incomes for spending on specific professional categories that display a high rate of tax evasion, in a bid to promote online transactions further.

Sources say that the ministry has asked banks for a list of the transactions made by customers online per professional sector. The professions that are not on the list of online transactions – suggesting that payments are carried out in cash and quite possibly without a receipt being issued – will be included in the expenditures that are partially exempt from the taxable income.

The ministry is hoping that the measure will encourage taxpayers to demand receipts from professionals such as doctors, engineers, tutors, financial and business consultants, accountants and lawyers, car repair shops and others who belong to sectors where cash transactions are customary. For example, if a taxpayer makes a payment of 1,500 euros via credit or debit card to a car repair shop, his or her taxable income will drop by 450 euros.

Migrants are boon for poor Roma villagers on Turkey-Greece border

For members of the Roma minority in the Turkish village of Karaagac on the border with Greece, the arrival of thousands of migrants desperately seeking to cross into the European Union could not have been better news.

Poor and living mainly from cultivating their gardens and collecting cardboard and plastics for recycling, Roma families are now looking to cash in catering to the needs of 4,000 migrants now in a makeshift tent camp at the frontier.

Farmers set up stands selling everything from tomatoes and cucumbers to quince and pomegranate. Others sold mineral water, bread, yoghurt and tinned teapots.

A few turned their horse-drawn carts into taxis to ferry exhausted migrants and their shopping to the border.

Hassan Tunai, who was selling water bottles, fruit juice and yoghurt, said earning money from the migrants left him with a bad feeling.

“I wish it would not be like this,” he said, wearing sunglasses and hoisting the Turkish flag on his stand. “When we see them (the migrants), the money that we earned loses its meaning. It does not make us happy.”

EU pours millions into Greece to act as border 'shield' against escalating migrant crisis

The European Union, in an effort to curb a brewing crisis at its borders, is pouring hundreds of millions of euros into Greece in the hope it will act as a “shield” against fresh migrant flows that could foreshadow a migrant crisis similar to that that wreaked havoc on the continent in 2015.

“This border is not only a Greek border, it is also a European border,”  E.U. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. “I thank Greece for being our European shield in these times.”

She announced nearly $800 million in funding for Greece, for establishing and keeping up “infrastructure” at the border. The dramatic move comes amid a sharply escalating crisis after Turkey opened the country’s border to Greece as part of an apparent push to make Europe offer more support in dealing with the fallout of the Syrian war.

Turkey to stop migrants crossing to Greece by sea

Turkey will no longer allow migrants to cross the Aegean sea to Greece because it is unsafe, the coastguard has said.

The order from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan comes a week after he said he was "opening the doors" for refugees to enter Europe, amid tensions over the Syrian conflict.

The EU accuses him of using migrants for political purposes. It insists its doors are "closed".

Meanwhile, clashes have again erupted at the land border.

There appears to have been no change in Turkey's position with regard to letting migrants try to enter Greece via this route.

UK aviation chiefs criticise decision to pull out of European safety agency after Brexit

The aerospace industry has reacted with concern to an announcement from transport secretary Grant Shapps that the UK will leave the EU’s aviation safety regime as a result of Brexit.

Mr Shapps said the UK will leave the European Aviation Safety Agency (Easa) when the Brexit transition period comes to an end on 31 December, switching responsibility for aircraft certification and safety regulation to Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

But industry body ADS said that staying in Easa was “the best option” for keeping UK companies competitive and ensuring their access to global export markets.
