Kef fire risk 05/08/23: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8906 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1260 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1228 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8881 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Boris Johnson vows to protect newts threatening plans for pool at his country manor
Ex-prime minister promises to build little ‘motels’ for amphibians if he has to

Boris Johnson has vowed to do “whatever it takes” to protect newts in his garden – even though they could stop him from building a new swimming pool at his country manor.

There speaks totally truthful Boris - I hope his place isn't on a bus route.

EXCLUSIVE: Inside a holiday to Greece by Jet2 to see if it lives up to its billing as the UK's No.1 package deal provider...
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-12369561/Inside-holiday-Greece-Jet2-lives-billing-UKs-No-1-package-deal-provider.html

Hm, not so much a review, more a sickly sweet thinly disguised plug for Jet2. IMO.

Italian fugitive caught after passion for football betrays his location
Vincenzo La Porta spotted in a photo of fans celebrating in Corfu after Napoli won Italy’s league championship

Love for his Naples football team betrayed the hideout of a longtime fugitive, who was captured while riding a moped on a Greek island, Italian police have said.

Naples-based Carabinieri paramilitary police said Vincenzo La Porta, who was on Italy’s list of 100 most dangerous fugitives, was spotted in a photo of fans in a restaurant in Corfu, who were celebrating after the Napoli football squad clinched Italy’s top league championship a few weeks ago.

Police then went to Corfu to tail the 60-year-old fugitive, who had been on the run for 11 years. They did not specify when he was arrested but said officers blocked him going down a Corfu street on a moped. Greek police later said he was arrested on Friday.

La Porta, who is thought to have links to the Naples-based Camorra syndicate, has been convicted in absentia of criminal association, tax evasion and fraud, the police said.

'Budding hunters' wanted for 'biggest' Loch Ness monster search in decades

The Loch Ness Centre in Scotland is calling for “budding monster hunters” and volunteers to join in what it dubs the largest search for the Loch Ness Monster since the 1970s.

The visitor attraction said this week that modern technology such as drones that produces thermal images of the lake will “search the waters in a way that has never been done before”.

The new surface water search for the fabled “Nessie”, planned for the weekend of August 26 and 27, is billed as the largest of its kind since the Loch Ness Investigation Bureau studied the loch for signs of the mythical beast in 1972.

Beer production jumped over 41% in 2022

Beer production in Greece increased significantly in 2022, with exports taking an increasingly important role, especially for the two biggest breweries, both foreign-owned.

Although there are currently 71 active breweries, with the ranks of microbrewers swelling, the two dominant players, and export-driven leaders, are Athenian Brewery, owned by Dutch group Heineken, and Olympic Brewery, owned by Danish multinational brewer Carlsberg.

Among Greek-owned brewers, Macedonian Thrace Brewery, which produces the Vergina brand, and the Hellenic Brewery of Atalanti (EZA) have significant market shares, while the microbreweries, scattered across almost all the country, are gaining customers, both through retail and in restaurants.
