Kef fire risk 31/08/23: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8850 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1213 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1299 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8918 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Windows 11 browser change: Europe applauds, outrage everywhere else

Microsoft will soon allow users in the European Union, as well as from Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, to once again open all links in Windows using their default web browser rather than forcing the use of Microsoft Edge.

Presumably will also apply to Windows users in the UK?

Trucks to be monitored in real time via satellite in Greece

A project to monitor long-haul trucks by satellite to crack down on contraband activities and human trafficking will be partly funded by the European Union’s Recovery Fund.

The project, conceived by the Independent Public Revenue Authority (AADE) is set to be completed in two and a half years.

On entering Greece, truckers will be provided with equipment that will facilitate satellite surveillance of their truck and the carried goods.

They will also pay a deposit which they will get back at the exit point, where they will also return the equipment.

The future of Prosecco is at risk

Centuries-old tradition of ‘heroic’ grape-growing under threat in parts of Europe, researchers fear

No mention of Greece but could equally apply to its small, hilly vineyards, I'd think.

Mitsotakis: Higher fines, prison sentences for arsonists

Fines will be increased and convicted arsonists will have to serve their sentence in jail even in cases of negligence, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday, during a parliamentary debate on the handling of the massive wildfires that have destroyed swathes of forest land in Greece over the past two months.

Devastated families will never know how two Yorkshire divers died days apart in Greece
Hull doctor Vincent Hong and Yorkshire businessman Tim Saville died on separate dives during an expedition on the island of Kea

The families of a Hull doctor and a Yorkshire businessman who died just two days apart while on a diving expedition in Greece have been told the cause of their deaths will never be known.

An inquest into their deaths was held in April in Hull and was adjourned. Further evidence was heard on Wednesday before being completed. Senior coroner Professor Paul Marks concluded the cause of death for both men was “related to scuba diving” and, with Tim, high blood pressure was an added contributory factor. He returned an ‘open’ conclusion in both cases.

On Wednesday, Prof Marks said: “Quite how Mr Hong and Mr Saville met their deaths cannot be determined on the evidence we have heard. We have gone to exhaustive lengths to determine the cause of death in both cases.

“We have been let down by Greek authorities who did not take blood samples at the time to test for carboxyheamoglobin levels (carbon monoxide in the blood) and did not examine the gas cylinders.”

A criminal court case will be heard in Greece in January next year. Kea Divers has been charged with negligent manslaughter following the deaths of Vincent and Tim.

Air traffic to increase in autumn as tourist season is extended

Air traffic in Greece from August 28 to October 22 is expected by the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation, commonly known as Eurocontrol, to be 10% to 30% higher than in 2022, due to the extension of the tourism season as more travelers opt for holidays outside the hottest months of the year.

In Europe, air traffic is expected to rise from 8% to 14% compared to 2022. Travel agents expect bookings for Greece to remain high at least until November.
