Kef fire risk 19/08/23: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8821 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1244 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1337 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8894 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Lolita the orca dies after spending more than half a century in captivity

Lolita, an orca at the Miami Seaquarium that had been in captivity for more than 50 years before the park bowed to public pressure and planned to release it into the ocean, died on Friday.

Lolita retired from performing last spring, following a stipulation set forth by the US Department of Agriculture as part of the Miami Seaquarium’s fresh exhibitor’s license.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a statement published in the New York Times that Lolita had been kept in “the smallest, bleakest orca tank in the world, deprived of any semblance of a natural life” and had displayed “repetitive and abnormal behaviour,” indicating “severe psychological trauma”.

Police searching for person who tortured horse to death

Police in the town of Halkida, in Evia, was searching on Saturday for the person who tortured to death a horse that was found lying in a rural street by passers by on Friday.

Officers were alerted by a phone call from citizens who saw the animal on Gorgopotamou street, in the area Haravgi.

The perpetrator or perpetrators had put a chain and rope around the horse’s mouth and neck and held it tied to a power pole. There were feces and a blood next to the animal’s body.
