Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8880 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1261 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1249 USD   $1 USD = 0.8889 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.6827 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5942 €UR
1 €UR = R21.5787 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0463 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

A 51 y-o local male arrested yesterday afternoon by Argostoli police for possession of cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply.

Seems the drugs were hidden inside a croissant type bread packed with cocaine and cannabis instead of chocolate and sent from Athens onboard a KTEL bus.

Turkish Airlines Flight Returns To Gate Due To Passenger's Uncaged Cat

On January 4, 2024, a Turkish Airlines Boeing 777-300ER bound for Athens had to return to the gate due to an uncaged cat causing a disturbance in the cabin. Turkish Airlines flight TK1843, originating from Istanbul Airport (IST) and destined for Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) in Greece, experienced an unexpected incident as it taxied for departure.

The disruption occurred when a passenger allowed their uncaged cat to roam freely in the cabin, prompting fellow passengers to report the issue to the cabin crew. RadarBox data indicates that the aircraft returned to the gate, resulting in a delay of two hours. The flight eventually departed at 10:00 a.m. local time after the passenger and the cat were removed from the plane.

Further investigation into the incident revealed that the passenger had brought the cat onboard without reservation, payment, or a suitable carrier for the animal. Consequently, Turkish Airlines is reportedly considering blacklisting the passenger, who has allegedly exhibited similar behaviour on previous flights with the airline.

Post Office suspected of more injustices over Horizon pilot scheme

The Post Office is suspected of wrongly prosecuting dozens more operators who took part in a pilot scheme of the faulty Horizon system, the Guardian has been told.

Amid growing anger over the treatment of postmasters whose lives have been ruined in the scandal, Whitehall sources have confirmed that a precursor scheme was rolled out in 1995 and 1996 to hundreds of branches in north-east England.

After taking part in the pilot, at least two branch managers were prosecuted despite protesting that there was a glitch in the system, a senior Labour MP has claimed.

The development comes after a national outcry over the treatment of post office operators between 1999 and 2015 after faulty Fujitsu software made it appear as though money was missing from their outlets.

The Radiodiagnostic Department of Argostoli hospital has benefited from a donation worth 200,000€ from kyria Rubina Liosatou for the provision and installation of a new Digital Mammogram machine.

Apparently kyria Liosatou is a 93 y-o expat living in Australia who previously worked at the hospital as a volunteer. In addition to the mammogram machine she has also donated an ambulance and has previously donated a similar amount to the General Hospital of Pyrgos, where her husband originates from.

Archaeologists uncover 4,500-year-old Ancient Egyptian tomb and artefacts

An ancient tomb believed to be more than 4,000 years old has been discovered in Egypt.

A team of Egyptian and Japanese archaeologists in Saqqara found burials, architectural elements and other artefacts during the mission. Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities confirmed the find on Saturday.

Among the discoveries are the remains of a human buried with a coloured mask and a burial for a small child which are believed to date back to the Second Dynasty, according to Ahram Online. The tomb dates between 2649 and 2150 BC, experts say.

Apple pays out over claims it deliberately slowed down iPhones

Apple has begun making payments in a long-running class action lawsuit over claims it deliberately slowed down certain iPhones in the US.

A similar case underway in the UK is seeking £1.6bn in compensation.

The US case dates back to December 2017, when Apple confirmed a long-held suspicion among phone owners by admitting it had deliberately slowed down some iPhones as they got older.

It led to the US legal action.

In the UK, Apple lost a bid to block a similar mass action lawsuit last November.

Apple has previously called the lawsuit "baseless" and said "we have never - and would never - do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades".

But unlike the US settlement, which only applied to devices in the iPhone 6 and 7 ranges, the UK lawsuit also seeks damages for those who had iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X devices.

Trump won’t sign Illinois pledge vowing not to overthrow government

Donald Trump refused to sign a loyalty oath pledging not to call for the US government to be overthrown when he registered to appear on the Illinois 2024 primary ballot, WBEZ/The Chicago Sun-Times have reported.

The declaration is not mandatory but has been signed by presidential candidates for decades as part of the necessary paperwork submitted to the Illinois State Board of Elections in order to secure ballot access.

The agreement dates back to the anti-communist scare of the 1950s and has already been signed, without objection, by President Joe Biden and Florida governor Ron DeSantis.

It compels the signatories to promise they will “not directly or indirectly teach or advocate the overthrow of the government of the United States or of this state or any unlawful change in the form of the governments thereof by force or any unlawful means”.

Missing pregnant woman’s body found in trunk

The body of a 41-year-old pregnant woman was found inside a trunk in a remote area of Halkidiki, northern Greece on Monday. The woman had been missing since New Year’s Day, from Thessaloniki.

Her partner and his friend are in police custody at Thessaloniki Police Headquarters, with the latter confessing to law enforcement that the woman’s partner committed the crime.

A Special Investigations Unit is examining the friend’s vehicle, which is believed to have transported the victim’s body.

Fujitsu has won more than 150 government contracts since Horizon scandal

Fujitsu, the firm behind the faulty Horizon IT system, has won over 150 government contracts since the Post Office stopped prosecuting its staff over financial discrepancies caused by the accounting software.

The Japanese company is still one of the government's 'Strategic Suppliers', which typically means it receives over £100 million in contracts per year, according to procurement analysts Tussell, but has made billions in the past decade.

But no one at the Post Office or Fujitsu has been held accountable, even after it was confirmed the accounting errors were caused by the computer system.

In fact, Fujitsu has continued to win government jobs worth millions, as recently as last month, despite calls for the firm to be frozen out of any new contracts.

In November last year, the government even awarded Fujitsu another £36 million to keep the Horizon contract running until 2025 after initially spending £2.4 billion.

Fujitsu was also awarded a contract in 2022 to work on a new UK emergency alert system for mobile phones and tablets - a move peers in the House of Lords labelled “immoral”.

Conservative former minister David Davis, asked whether the government should continue awarding contracts to Fujitsu, said: "I would certainly suspend any possibility of new contracts until that is over."

"What I do not want to see is one injustice followed by another," he told the BBC.

Post Office IT firm Fujitsu reports £22m UK profits as directors receive payouts
Company under fire over its Horizon system, which gave false impression post office operators had stolen cash

Fujitsu, the technology company whose flawed Horizon IT system is at the heart of the Post Office scandal, has posted profits of £22m in its UK arm and paid out millions in salary and bonuses to directors, its latest accounts reveal.

The $30bn (£23.5bn) Japanese company designed the now infamous centralised accounting software, which gave the false impression that about 3,500 owner-operators in charge of sub-post offices had stolen money from the company.

As a result, about 700 were wrongly prosecuted. Dozens of the victims died before they could clear their names or claim compensation and the scandal has been linked to four suicides.

Its three directors shared pay of £2.3m, of which £1.3m was paid to one unnamed executive.

In a joint letter to the Sunday Times, Lord Falconer and Lord Abuthnot said the ongoing inquiry into the scandal “needs to examine in detail the role of Fujitsu, which provided and managed the faulty software. Was Fujitsu completely unaware of the devastating effect of its actions? Should it not contribute to the compensation claims of hundreds of sub-postmasters?”

Fujitsu declined to answer questions about its accounts.
