The total value of residential properties acquired in Greece by non-European Union citizens over the last few years in the context of an incentive which provides a five-year residence permit to those who buy real estate totaling at least 250,000 euros is estimated at some 200 million euros, according to Deputy Development Minister Notis Mitarakis.

Mitarakis revealed that a total of 519 investors have already made use of the provision, with 436 permits already issued and another 83 pending, following the submission of applications.

The vast majority of applicants are Russian (185 permits) and Chinese (119), while a distant third nationality is Egyptian, with 33 permits, ministry data showed.

However a significant share of those permits are not destined for new buyers, but rather current property owners who may have acquired their assets in recent years and are now rushing to apply for the permit.

Retirement age to rise by as much as six months per year
The pensions minister, Steve Webb, says Britons must accept dramatically longer working lives to avoid a health care funding crisis

Older people will be encouraged to work longer under a Government plan to increase the average retirement age by six months every year.

Ministers believe that the retirement age needs to increase dramatically to reflect Britain’s ageing population and to avoid a health care crisis.

The average age of retirement is 64.7 for men and 63.1 for women.

With Youth Unemployment high, does this just mean that Grandparents are staying in the jobs that should be cascading down the system to their grandchildren?

If they want people to work longer they have to create extra jobs. Curbing immigration, if it happens won't be enough.

Funny how other airlines seem to be flying out of ZTH.  Two Thomson flights left at 1300 and 1330 today for MAN and LGW.

Ryanair refused to land in Kef last night too - going for Athens instead.
In fairness, one of its wings was still in Dublin.

T'was a tad wet 'n' windy last night.

It's a low-budget airline - you expect two wings?  :flyer:

Latest I've heard they're being sent Athens-Kef by coach / ferry. *If true* not sure what that means for departing passengers.
