Card commission to go down from next week

The average commission commercial businesses pay to banks for card transactions will soon drop to below 1 percent from the current average rate of 1.2-1.5 percent. This will come into effect after the application of the European Union directive on cuts to charges for interbank transactions as of next Wednesday.

Data originating from the banks show that the commission the credit institutions charge for card transactions ranges between 0.80 percent and 2 percent, depending on the volume of each company’s transactions, with the average commission amounting to 1.20 percent.

New wealth statements will need to declare all household items, including kiddies toys!

A ministerial decree signed by the justice and finance ministers require Greeks to declare all valuables in their wealth statements henceforth. These include precious gems, jewelry, valuables and sums of cash exceeding 15,000 euros that they keep in their home.

The decree, signed on Tuesday, means that wealth statements for 2016 need to be submitted electronically and are required to include all household valuables whose total estimated worth exceeds 30,000 euros, including those belonging to children.

Greek island abolishes plastic bags to defend environment

The small island of Alonnisos, the third member of the Northern Sporades group in the central Aegean, is abolishing plastic bags from all stores and supermarkets starting December 1 to protect its fragile ecosystem, the non-governmental organization Mediterranean SOS Network (MedSOS) announced on Tuesday.

The lush green island, home of the most important remaining populations of Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus) in the region, is the first area of Greece to trade plastic bags with environment-friendly canvas bags for transporting goods.

Police investigate mystery penguin death at Dortmund zoo

Police in the German city of Dortmund are investigating the death of one penguin and the disappearance of two others from the local zoo.

On Monday morning zookeepers found one Humboldt penguin lying dead in its cage and two others missing, police spokesman Marco Mueller said.

It is the latest in a string of mysterious incidents at Dortmund Zoo.

Last month a sea lion was found dead with a smashed skull. In August three pygmy marmosets were stolen.
