Met Office name Storm CiaránStorm Ciarán will bring a period of strong winds and heavy rain across parts of southern England and Wales on Thursday.This coming week will continue unsettled for much of the UK. A number of Severe Weather Warnings for rain are expected to be issued for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before a deep area of low pressure, named today as Storm Ciaran, brings strong winds and heavy rain to southern parts of England and Wales. Met office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Chris Almond, said “Winds associated with Storm Ciarán are likely to gust to 80mph along the south coast of England, with a small risk of somewhere exposed seeing 90mph, and winds could even gust up to 50 or 60 mph further inland.“This deep low-pressure system will also bring heavy rain to much of the UK, but the heaviest rain is expected in southern and western areas with 20 to 25mm quite widely across the region but up to 40 to 60mm potentially over higher ground. Heavy and persistent rain will fall onto already saturated ground bringing a risk of further impacts such as flooding in areas that are already struggling to clean up from the heavy rainfall we have seen over the last week or so.”Warnings will continue to be updated over the coming days, so it is important to stay up to date with the Met Office forecast and warnings in your area.
Severe weather eventRoad users in the South East region of England are advised to check ahead and plan for disruption to their journeys due to forecast gales from 05:00 Thursday 2nd November until 18:00.Storm Ciarán, is going to bring a swathe of very strong winds across the southeast region. While the wind is expected to be around 50-60mph in the northern half of the region, it will be much stronger along south coastal routes, with 65-75mph between Bournemouth and Ramsgate. The wind will gradually decrease from the west during the afternoon to become confined to Folkestone and Ramsgate by the evening.There is a particularly high risk that high-sided vehicles and other 'vulnerable' vehicles such as caravans and motorbikes could be blown over.
Storm Ciarán: UK braces for up to 80mph winds with 'danger to life' weather warningsMuch of the country is bracing itself for more extreme weather as Storm Ciarán brings a fresh bout of wind and rain set to batter parts of the UK this week.Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said the storm is “forming as we speak” and will hit on Wednesday evening, with coastal gusts of 70mph to 80mph and the potential for 85mph.Amber warnings are in place for the entire south coast of England and parts of Pembrokeshire on Thursday, together with further yellow rain warnings.A further yellow warning for rain and wind has been issued across the southeast coast from 5am to 9am on Wednesday with a yellow warning for wind across southern England and parts of South Wales from 6pm on Wednesday and throughout Thursday.Yellow warnings for rain are in place for southern England and Wales, northeast Wales, northeast England stretching up to Glasgow and the southeast of Northern Ireland.Kate Marks, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency said “significant flooding” is possible.
Storm Debi: Weather warning and ‘danger to life’ flood alert as heavy rain and wind to batter UKYellow weather warnings have been issued as heavy downpours and gale-force winds are set to batter parts of the UK.Storm Debi, the fourth storm of the season, is expected to see gales up to 80mph along coastal areas as it hits northern England and the whole of Ireland on Monday.
Turning colder with a possibility of snowColder air is feeding from the north across many parts of the UK over the next few days. This brings the potential for wintry showers across North Sea coastal areas as well as some inland parts of northern Britain. These may bring some snow and ice impacts in the coming days.Towards the end of the week there is a possibility of snow across parts of the south, but this is far from certain. David Oliver, a Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, explains: “Snow in any affected area is unlikely to be anything more than transient and short-lived, but it could lead to small totals and some disruption over a few hours before melting.”The UKHSA has issued a yellow cold-health alert for the health sector covering northern regions of England which runs through the whole week. Snowfall in late autumn or early winter doesn’t generally linger – especially in southern Britain - because ground temperatures broadly remain relatively high after the summer, especially compared with values in late winter, after the ground loses more of its warmth.
Cold conditions continueCold weather continues across the UK with widespread overnight frosts in the coming days and a risk of snow for some regions.Colder conditions are now covering all areas, with little change into the weekend; daytime temperatures will be rooted in single figures and overnight temperatures falling well below freezing in many places.

It’ll remain windy for many on Friday, with further periods of rain likely to sweep in from the west, and some snow across the Northern Isles of Scotland.It remains generally rather unsettled for the weekend before Christmas, with further Atlantic frontal systems bringing rain and strong winds to parts of the UK. Rain will be heaviest in the west and northwest through the weekend, with any snow most likely confined to high ground in northern Scotland. Some central and eastern areas of the UK could remain mostly dry.There are still some uncertainties in the details of the forecast for Christmas Day.

White Christmas in Scotland despite warm temperaturesA white Christmas has been officially confirmed by the Met Office following snowfall in the Highlands of Scotland.A mixture of rain and snow was reported in Tulloch Bridge and Aviemore on Monday afternoon despite mild temperatures elsewhere.There was also light snowfall in Braemar, Aberdeenshire.The Met Office also provisionally confirmed the highest daily minimum temperature for Christmas Day on record, at 12.4C.Temperatures at Exeter Airport and East Malling, Kent, did not fall below 12.4C, the Met Office said, beating the previous record of 11.5C measured at Waddon in Croydon in 1983.The highest single temperature was recorded at 13.6C at Exeter Airport, making it the warmest December 25 since 2016.

Storm Isha: Most of UK issued with amber weather warning ahead of 80mph windsThe Met Office has extended its amber wind warning to cover most of the UK ahead of Storm Isha.The weather system is set to batter “everybody” in the UK with wind and rain during a “rare” weather cycle, forecasters say.Winds of up to 80mph will swoop in later on Sunday, potentially causing power cuts and loss of mobile phone signal, while roads and bridges are likely to be shut and transport services could face delays and cancellations in some areas.Two 12-hour amber wind warnings will be in place from 6pm on Sunday until Monday morning. This has been the most active start to a storm season since records began and the earliest that we have reached the letter 'I' in the alphabetical storm-naming convention introduced by the Met Office. Hot on the heels of Storm Isha, which brought winds touching nearly 100mph on Sunday night, Storm Jocelyn will bring windy conditions right across the UK with northern areas likely to be worst affected.
Sahara dust cloud headed to UK as Met Office warns cars could be covered by orange dirtThe Met Office has warned a huge Saharan dust cloud could be heading towards the United Kingdom.Last year a similar cloud brought spectacular sunsets but motorists saw their vehicles covered in a fine dust that had travelled nearly 5,000km from the Sahara Desert. It is expected the new plume will be washed down from the atmosphere by rain falling as red dirt on Sunday afternoon.Dust brings spectacular red sunsets because particles in the atmosphere scatter blue light more than red, which is why the sky appears blue during the day.When the sun is low in the sky, like at dawn and dusk, the light has farther to travel and so the blue light is scattered too much for us to see it, with the Saharan dust exacerbating this effect and turning the skies a deeper red.
UK records warmest ever January temperature, Met Office revealsThe new maximum temperature could break the previous record by more than a degree celsius The record for the highest maximum temperature on a January day has just been broken after a provisional record was measured in northern Scotland.The Met Office said they had recorded a 19.6C temperature on Sunday in Kinlochewe, a village in the northwest Highlands about an hour’s drive from Inverness.
Amber warnings for snow issuedThe two warnings cover North Wales from 8am until 3pm on Thursday and the South Pennines and Peak District from 12noon until 6pm on Thursday.Outside of these Amber warnings there are Yellow warnings on Thursday for potentially disruptive snow extending from mid-Wales and the Midlands north. A warning for snow has also been issued for Northern Ireland, though disruption here is expected to be more localised.
