Kef fire risk 19/10/22: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8954 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0130 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1168 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9872 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Greece’s new tourism campaign: Wanna feel 20 again?

The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) aims to smack two flies with one poster: attract retirees and prolong the tourist season.

As part of a 20-million-euro campaign to advertize Greece abroad, posters with an older couple cheekily feeding each other watermelon and enjoying wine onboard a yacht, featuring the question “Wanna feel 20 again?” will appear in several European capitals.

It’s not just a reference to feeling young again; it’s referring to temperature.

What is the pensions triple lock and how does it work?

Inflation is back in the double digits, and speculation is swirling the government could break its promise on the pensions triple lock guarantee.

At Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, Liz Truss committed to increasing state pensions in line with rising inflation, despite reports claiming she was poised to overturn the Tory party's manifesto pledge.

Alarms were sounding over the pensions guarantee, after new chancellor Jeremy Hunt launched a mission to plug a multi-billion pound black hole in the UK economy.

But what exactly is the pensions triple lock and how much of a difference does it make to pensioners' financial outlooks?

Child sex attacker allowed to go on holiday to Greece after pleading guilty

A paedophile who admitted a series of assaults against two young girls has been allowed to go on a Greek island holiday before he is sentenced.

Matthew Thompson, 48, pleaded guilty to assault of a child by penetration, sexual assault of a child, sexual activity with a child and taking indecent photographs of a child on Wednesday.

Judge Jonathan Gibson, who presided over the case at Bradford Crown Court, called the offending “extremely serious” after the defendant accepted 10 charges in total.

But he also agreed that Thompson should be allowed to go on a pre-paid two-week vacation to the Greek island of Kos, for which he will depart on Thursday.

Wood burning taking toll on health, environment

As households turn to wood burning to tackle soaring energy bills, experts are warning about the impact on the environment as increased wood consumption risks decimating dwindling forests and boosting illegal logging. Moreover, wood smoke is also a major source of smog, responsible for almost half of the cancer-causing air pollution in Athens.

Conservative Chief Whip resigns in further blow to PM Liz Truss

The chief whip of the Conservative party has resigned, ITV News understands, in what would be a major blow to the Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Wendy Morton, MP for Aldridge-Brownhills in the West Midlands since 2015, was appointed to the position by Ms Truss just six weeks ago.

As chief whip, she was responsible for maintaining discipline within the Conservative party.

Chief whip Wendy Morton and her deputy Craig Whittaker have reportedly resigned. It emerged as a proposal brought by Labour to reinstate a ban on fracking was voted against by 326 MPs – with 230 MPs voting for it.

A number of MPs reported that Tory MPs – one who was “crying” – had been “manhandled” and “bullied” into voting ‘no’. The shambles led to Mr Whittaker reportedly saying that he’s “f****** furious and I don’t give a f*** anymore.”

More reports from MPs about what happened during tonight’s chaotic vote on fracking in the House of Commons.

Business secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg was told to “f*** off” by Tory MPs, some of which were allegedly physically forced to vote against Labour’s motion to reinstate a ban on fracking.

MPs said they saw Tory members physically “dragged” and “bullied” into the ‘no’ lobby to vote against Labour’s proposals to ban fracking.

Labour MP, Chris Bryant, tweeted that he saw “members being physically manhandled onto the lobby and bullied”.

On Sky News, he alleged that Therese Coffey and Jacob Rees-Mogg may have been involved into physically forcing an MP into the ‘no’ lobby.
