Large Property Tax being mulled

The government is considering getting rid of the Single Property Tax (ENFIA) and bringing back the Large Property Tax (FMAP) next year, provided that Finance Ministry committees manage to harmonize property prices used for tax purposes (known as “objective values”) with actual market rates.

Deputy Finance Minister Katerina Papanatsiou told a conference on Wednesday that “our aim is for ENFIA to be replaced by a tax on large properties that will be progressive.”

Greece to build its first crematorium

Breaking away from centuries of tradition, Greece’s leftist government has moved to approve legislation to build the country’s first crematorium — a project that has been blocked for more than a decade by the powerful Greek Orthodox Church.

Demand for cremations has surged in recent years because cemeteries are overcrowded, particularly Athens, where more than half of the country’s population of 11 million live.

Limited availability means that grave plots have to be recycled, with relatives forced to exhume their dead after three years. Gravediggers are paid to remove bones and return them to the families in boxes, so that they can be placed in a tomb.

Scotland set to ban parents smacking children in first for UK
