Ministry: Program for Greek Tourism Businesses to Operate All Year Round

The Tourism Ministry is planning to launch a special program to encourage businesses of the sector to operate 12 months a year and thus support efforts to establish Greece as a 365 days a year destination.

Under the title “Tourism Businesses Open 365 Days a Year”, the program is planned to operate at popular and developed spots in Greece, ideal for year-round tourism.

Also, under the 365 days a year concept, the ministry will also examine the possibility of establishing special tourist zones (areas) in Greece for year-round tourism development, focusing on medical tourism, MICE tourism, golf tourism and senior tourism.

Monolithi in Preveza is longest sandy beach in the EU

The title of longest sandy beach of the European Union goes to Monolithi in Preveza, which stretches 25 kilometres long and is in western Greece, along the Ionian Sea on the Epirus mainland.

The beach of Monolithi extends along the west coast of the Prefecture of Preveza.

The name Monolithi comes from Greek roots “Μόνος” + “Λίθος” = “single” + “stone”. It was an oversea rock 10X10m, near the coast, until year 1942, when German and Italian soldiers destroyed the rock with mortar fire.

Kefalonian Lines and Ionian Group ferries between Kef and the mainland look likely to be confined to port due to a local 24 hour strike on 13 June. Anyone planning a crossing on that day might be best advised to keep checking with the ferry company / agent.

Jeremy Thorpe 'hit-man might not be dead', police admit

A probe into a scandal involving former Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe will be reopened after police may have wrongly assumed one of the suspects was dead.

A 2015 investigation into the alleged attempted murder of his lover - Norman Scott - was closed in 2017.

Gwent Police assumed Andrew Newton - who shot Mr Scott's dog and claimed he was paid to kill Mr Scott - had died. But they now say he may still be alive.

Mr Scott said he thought police were "continuing the cover up".

The revelations have been unearthed in the BBC Four documentary The Jeremy Thorpe Scandal.

The programme will air after the end of the dramatisation A Very British Scandal, which stars Hugh Grant as Jeremy Thorpe and Ben Whishaw as Norman Scott.

Zakynthos man who killed alleged child molester hailed by supporters

A 26-year-old man alleged to have killed his 70-year-old father on May 27 in the village of Volimes on Zakynthos was remanded in custody on Saturday after facing an investigating magistrate on the Ionian island on Saturday on charges of manslaughter.

The 26-year-old was cheered by a crowd of supporters on his arrival at the magistrate’s office with cries of “bravo” and “well done.”

According to sources, the 70-year-old is alleged to have physically abused the two young children of his third wife.

It is unclear whether the 26-year-old was also abused.
