Kef fire risk 25/10/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8964 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1155 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.0951 USD   $1 USD = 0.9131 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7209 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5810 €UR
1 €UR = R21.3324 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0468 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Brit dad unconscious after motorbike crash in Greece as family plea for financial help

A British dad-of-four is in a serious condition in hospital after he was involved in a motorcycle accident in Greece.

Kie Mathias, a father to "four beautiful girls" from Lydden near Dover, is currently in a serious condition at a hospital as doctors assess his injuries after he was involved in a serious crash in Athens. Some reports say he has a number of broken bones and severe head injuries.

Kie was riding his rented motorbike on Friday when he was involved in a crash with a trolleybus - a form of transport in Athens likened to both a tram and a bus.

Kie's brother Daniel has set up a GoFundMe and is asking for help to pay his medical bills as they don't think his insurance will cover his expenses. Once he is stable, they plan to put him on a flight back home to the UK.

Road accident fatalities in country above EU average

The number of people killed in traffic accidents in Greece is alarmingly high compared to other EU countries. Although the absolute number of fatalities remains lower than pre-pandemic levels (2019), it increased slightly over the last three years (2020-22).

Compared to the rest of the EU, Greece was the fourth worst in 2022 in terms of such fatalities per million inhabitants (71), with experts citing poor driving behavior. The EU average is 46 deaths per million inhabitants.

Big banks linked to products with pangolin and leopard parts

Global banking giants are investing in companies which produce traditional Chinese medicines containing leopard and pangolin parts, a report has found.

Both species are classed as threatened.

The Environmental Investigation Authority (EIA) identified 62 banks and financial institutions which are investing in three pharmaceutical groups making nine products which they say contain leopard or pangolin.

The BBC has contacted the companies in question for comment.

The companies include UK financial services giants such as HSBC, Prudential, and Legal & General, as well as global investment firms including Goldman Sachs, UBS, Deutsche Bank and BlackRock.

Leopards and pangolins are threatened, which means they are likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. Both are also listed on the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) treaty which prohibits international commercial trade in them and their parts, in a bid to ensure their survival in the wild is not threatened.

Crime explosion in Greece - 55% of prisoners are migrants

One of the biggest problems facing Greek society today is crime. Its increase in recent years is significant. Despite the long-winded announcements and plans we hear occasionally from the Ministry of Citizen Protection, the situation needs to improve.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants reside illegally in Greece, and in public opinion, there is a view that they are responsible for the increase in crime and that they are the perpetrators of most crimes.

But is it so, or is it a false impression?

Road closure after WWII bomb is found in Glyfada

A World War II bomb was found on Tuesday in the southern Athenian suburb of Glyfada. A controlled explosion is planned for Thursday leading to the temporary closure of Posidonos Avenue.

The bomb was found during construction works at the old airport. Posidonos Avenue will be affected from 12.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. on Thursday for setting off a controlled explosion that will neutralize ammunition.

Milly Beth Turnham's ten-year ban from keeping animals

A WOMAN who was filmed repeatedly beating a puppy with a riding crop has been banned from keeping animals for ten years.

The shocking footage shows Milly Beth Turnham, 23, throw young Shelby into a room from shoulder height before carrying out a prolonged attack on the cowering dog.

The footage, which was filmed at an address in Bridgwater led to Turnham being investigated and prosecuted by the RSPCA.

The animal welfare charity was contacted with concerns about Turnham’s behaviour towards tri-coloured collie Shelby, who was just six-months-old at the time of the attack.

The sickening video was shared with the charity after it had been uploaded onto Facebook by Turnham’s partner, who filmed the incident in April 2022.
