Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8926 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1203 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1354 USD   $1 USD = 0.8807 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.6683 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5994 €UR
1 €UR = R21.3224 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0468 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Great that parents will get a lie in instead of having to get up for the school run.

Forget expensive trainers, a smart phone or the latest Xbox, every kiddie will be putting a driverless car at top of their wish list to Santa.

Most Common Names in Greece, Cyprus, and Around the World

Can you guess the most common names in Greece and Cyprus? The two countries, where naming customs follow a widely-used pattern of naming a child after their grandparents, are known for having a list of only four or five iconic names for each gender.

Names hold a very important place in Greek and Cypriot culture, as each name is linked to a Greek Orthodox saint, and every person with that name celebrates their name day on that saint’s feast day, almost like a birthday.

Then, of course, there are also the most common Greek and Cypriot last names.

In Greece, the most common family name is Papadopoulos, followed by Pappas, Karagiannis, and Vlachos. In Cyprus, Georgiou is the most widely-seen surname, with Charalambous, Ioannou, and Constantinou ranking next on the list of common last names.

Most Greek last names are topographical, meaning that they refer to a specific place of origin.

The place of origin is indicated by including the actual name of the region in the name. For example, Maniatis comes from Mani, a region in the southern Peloponnese. Topographical names can also include certain characteristics and indicate ancestral location, such as last names ending in -idis or -akis from Pontus and Crete, respectively.

Another common category of Greek family names includes those that reflect the profession of an ancestor. Such names include Psaras (fisherman) and Samaras (saddle maker).

Do you know any Greek women named Maria, Eleni, or Katerina? You probably know at least one, if not more, as they are the most common first names among Greek women. In Cyprus, the list is nearly the same, with Maria and Eleni toping the list, followed by Androula.

Have you been wondering about male names in Greece and Cyprus? If you have a certain list in mind, you may (or may not) be surprised—Andreas, Giorgos, and Kostas are the most common first name for Cypriot men, while Giorgos, Yiannis, and Dimitris are found most frequently in Greece.

'An absolute horror': 'Whole family killed' in France in Christmas attack, police say

Four young children and their mother were killed in their home near Paris in an "exceptionally violent crime", police say. The children's father was arrested on Tuesday.

The mother and two daughters, aged seven and 10, were stabbed so many times overnight from Sunday to Monday that police could not work out the number of wounds, Prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier told reporters in the city of Meaux.

Police also found the couple’s two sons, ages 9 months and four-years-old, had been suffocated or drowned at the apartment.

The prosecutor described the scene as a small, blood-stained apartment, left in extreme disarray.

‘Pints’ of wine to be stocked in British supermarkets for first time

The changes will also allow new quantities of both pre-packed still and sparkling wine – in bottles or cans – to be sold in 200ml and 500ml quantities alongside the new 568ml “pint” quantity, to bring more alignment between the two drinks.

There is no legal obligation for businesses to sell in the new sizes.

Greece would offer major treasures to UK for Parthenon marbles, minister says
Culture minister Lina Mendoni pledges to ‘fill the void’ at the British Museum should the ancient sculptures be returned

Greece is prepared to part with some of its greatest treasures to “fill the void” at the British Museum if the Parthenon marbles were reunited in Athens, the country’s culture minister has said.

Speaking to the Guardian at the end of a momentous year for the campaign to retrieve the fifth-century BC masterpieces, Lina Mendoni vowed the institution’s revered Greek galleries would never go empty.

“Our position is clear,” she said. “Should the sculptures be reunited in Athens, Greece is prepared to organise rotating exhibitions of important antiquities that would fill the void.”
