Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8874 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1268 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1274 USD   $1 USD = 0.8869 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.6869 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5928 €UR
1 €UR = R21.5233 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0464 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Australian police renew search for wanted man in Greece before statute of limitations runs out

Australian police are issuing a global plea to locate one of the country’s most wanted men who they say fled to Greece after allegedly stabbing a man to death in a Sydney nightclub 25 years ago.

James Dalamangas is wanted over his alleged involvement in the murder of George Giannopoulos in Belmore, in Sydney’s south-west, in April 1999.

Police issued a warrant for Dalamangas’ arrest the day after he allegedly fatally stabbed Giannopoulos when the 32-year-old father of two reportedly intervened in a fight at the venue.

Dalamangas allegedly fled to Greece following the incident. He has never been found even though police have conducted “extensive inquiries” into his whereabouts.

Australian authorities believe Dalamangas is still living in Greece where the 25-year statute of limitations — which imposes a legal deadline to pursue a criminal case — is soon to be reached.

Former Post Office boss Paula Vennells to return CBE following Horizon scandal

A former Post Office boss who was in charge of the company during the Horizon scandal has announced she is to return her CBE.

Paula Vennells, who was chief executive officer of Post Office Limited from 2012 to 2019, announced in a statement following huge pressure that she would hand back her gong.

It comes after more than 1.2 million people signed a petition urging the government to strip her of it, following the release of an ITV drama which revealed the level of injustice in the Horizon scandal.

That mustn't be the end of it, she and others have serious questions to answer.

Greece Launches Commercial Operations, Private Use, International Travel, Applications For Yachts

The Greek government has taken a significant step towards digital modernization by introducing the “e-Charter Permission Application” for yachts. This electronic system now processes applications for various types of sea voyages, including commercial operations, private use, international travel, and empty voyages.

Under the revised e-charter framework, eligible yachts can commence and conclude charters in Greece without the previous requirements of:

    Possessing a Greek charter license
Establishing a business address within Greece

It’s crucial to note that despite these streamlined processes, conventional VAT regulations pertaining to Greek VAT continue to apply.

Post Office sacked me over 2003 Horizon warning, IT expert says

An IT expert has criticised the Post Office for ignoring his report which found "concerning discrepancies" in its software more than 20 years ago.

Jason Coyne, who worked for Preston-based Best Practice Plc at the time, was instructed to examine the computer system called Horizon in 2003.

He said he notified the Post Office the data was "unreliable" but he was ignored, sacked then discredited.

The BBC has approached the Post Office for comment.

South Korea passes bill banning dog meat trade

South Korea’s parliament has endorsed landmark legislation banning the country's dwindling dog meat industry.

Public calls for the ban have grown sharply amid animal rights campaigns and worries about the country’s international image in recent years.

Recent surveys show more people want its ban and a majority of South Koreans don’t eat dog meat any longer.

But the surveys also indicated one in every three South Koreans still oppose the ban even though they do not eat dog meat.

On Tuesday, the National Assembly passed the bill by a 208-0 vote.

One litre of bottled water contains 250,000 invisible plastic particles

A new study found people are consuming a quarter million of tiny invisible pieces of plastic with every litre of bottled water – 10-100 times more than previously estimated.

One litre of water in a plastic bottle was found to contain an average of 240,000 particles, research published on Monday showed. Most of these are nanoparticles which have the potential to penetrate human cells and gain entry into the bloodstream and major organs.

Notaries public return to their duties, following decision to use e-platform for property transactions

Greek notaries public ended their abstention from duties and returned to them on Monday, following a decision of their extraordinary general assembly meeting approving the use of a digital property transfer system set up by the government on January 1.

The digital registration of property transfers through the platform https://akinita.gov.gr will allow a same-day response (acceptance or rejection), instead of multi-month delays in bureaucratic processing.

The platform can be used by both citizens and notaries public.

Reclaiming 700,000 vacant homes could ease Greece's housing crisis

High vacancy rates in urban areas drive up rental prices, but dormant properties offer a solution if revitalized, experts say. The return to the real estate market of at least 700,000 homes that are currently closed or have stood empty for a number of years could play a key role in addressing Greece’s housing crisis.

According to data compiled by the Eteron Institute for Research and Social Change, Greece has the highest percentage of vacant homes in Europe, with large concentrations in urban areas. In 2011, the percentage of vacant houses in the Municipality of Athens was 31%, in Piraeus 28% and in Thessaloniki 28.2%.

These properties are usually inherited, with the heirs not needing them for housing, but at the same time lacking the money needed to renovate them so they can exploit them. The usual result is that they remain closed for years.

Probably worth a read, an opinion article in the Guardian. Snippet below:

We have seen heroes emerge from the Post Office scandal. Now focus on the villains

Also last summer, unbelievably, it emerged that the current CEO of the Post Office had actually run a bonus scheme to reward executives for cooperating with the inquiry – surely their most basic civic and moral duty.

This was at the same time that 81-year-old former subpostmaster Francis Duff finally received £330,000 compensation for having lost everything during the scandal – only for the official receiver (part of the Department for Business) to immediately claw back £322,000 of it to cover bankruptcy and owed income tax. He couldn’t afford to heat his home last winter.

The underwater village: Greek town forced to move to combat risk of climate change

The villagers of Metamorfosi are afraid.

Since September 7 when storm Daniel hit, Metamorfosi’s more than 200 inhabitants have been scattered around nearby villages and towns.

Two people drowned as the storm hit and the village was left completely submerged underwater.

The storm was a once in a thousand years' meteorological event, they were told. But they now live in fear that even if they manage to repair the damage and return to their village, Metamorfosi will soon face yet another catastrophe.

Petros Kontogiannis, a fireman who also serves as the village president, told ITV News: "In 2020, storm Janus meant we had to fight for five days and nights to save our village, then came Diomedes, another bad weather system, and then Daniel in 2023.

"And just a few weeks after that came another storm called Elias."

He said this is why the villagers voted overwhelmingly in December to adopt a proposal by the Greek Government to move landlocked Metamorfosi, a village dating to at least the 13th century, a few miles up the road on slightly higher ground.

Metamorfosi may not be the only village to be moved uphill to counter the increased risks of a changing climate.

Storm Daniel affected over 50 settlements in the Thessaly region and some of them, including neighbouring Vlochos village, are also considering a move.

How much do junior doctors earn?

WHAT WAS CLAIMED
Junior doctors are currently paid £14 an hour.

OUR VERDICT
False. Following a pay rise, first-year junior doctors in England receive £15.53 an hour in basic pay only. The average junior doctor, with a few years’ experience, earns much more.
