THESSALONIKI, Greece – Nearly 300 firefighters, volunteers and soldiers are striving to contain large forest fires on the northern Greek island of Thassos, which has damaged homes and forced the evacuation of a village. The fire department says the blazes are believed to have been started by lightning strikes during a heavy storm, and broke out at four different spots across the island late Friday.
Food prices keep increasing while household incomes are strikingly low, according to data recently published by Eurostat. The European statistical agency says that food prices in Greece have seen a general increase of 2.3 percent from last year, while the rest of the eurozone only saw an average of 0.9 percent increase during the same time period.
Article in topontiki.gr (in Greek) seems to suggest that six ancient statues found off Xi beach around 1980 'disappeared' and found their way to the constituency of Antonis Samaras,ex-ND PM, where they remain. No idea how accurate that story is.
What has always concerned me, is who went round chopping all the arms off the statues? there must have been plenty sickoes even in those times.
