THESSALONIKI, Greece –  Nearly 300 firefighters, volunteers and soldiers are striving to contain large forest fires on the northern Greek island of Thassos, which has damaged homes and forced the evacuation of a village.

The fire department says the blazes are believed to have been started by lightning strikes during a heavy storm, and broke out at four different spots across the island late Friday.

Food prices keep increasing while household incomes are strikingly low, according to data recently published by Eurostat. The European statistical agency says that food prices in Greece have seen a general increase of 2.3 percent from last year, while the rest of the eurozone only saw an average of 0.9 percent increase during the same time period.

Article in topontiki.gr (in Greek) seems to suggest that six ancient statues found off Xi beach around 1980 'disappeared' and found their way to the constituency of Antonis Samaras,ex-ND PM, where they remain.

No idea how accurate that story is.

Seems to have some truth to it as the head of the Ionian Islands Regional Council, Theodoros Galiatsatos, has called for their return.

And what about their heads. It's a bit like eating jelly babies - head first, then arms then...
