The ‘Hachico’ of Crete Dies Waiting for its Owner

The “Hachiko” of Crete, the loyal dog that waited for his owner, died eight years after his human friend in the village of Patelles.

For the last eight years, the dog walked every morning to a local supermarket in the village of Patelles, Crete waiting patiently for his owner, who died of a heart attack in the same shop eight years ago.

The loyal dog spent the whole day in the super market and in the evening it was returning to its home, where his best friend was no longer there.

Taxpayers will need to use cash even less

Taxpayers will need to increase the number of transactions they conduct with credit or debit cards and via e-banking in 2019 in order to see some of their annual income exempted from taxation, as the Finance Ministry is planning to raise the minimum requirement by up to 50 percent or even more.

Expansion of card terminals in businesses

Dozens more professions will soon be forced to install and operate credit and debit card terminals. Sources say the Finance Ministry is expanding the obligation of accepting card payments to more professionals in a decision to be published by the end of the year, and that businesses included in the measure will have a three-month grace period for compliance.

Various scenarios have been examined at the Finance Ministry regarding the sectors to join the list of professions who are obligated to install a card terminal, with several officials arguing that the measure needs to be expanded to taxis and kiosks, among others.

Fewer young Greeks smoking, data shows

Despite the failure of successive governments to implement a decade-old smoking ban, the majority of youngsters in Greece do not smoke, 2017 data from statistics agency ELSTAT show.

Only 12.7 percent of Greeks aged 16-24 spoke daily and 8.1 percent smoke occasionally, a reduction attributed to rising awareness concerning the dangers of tobacco.

Take into account the age group: the teenagers probably just grunt and groan, the post-teenagers are glued to their smart phones sending txt msgs to one another.
