Skin cancer rates have soared by 45 per cent in a decade as legacy of package holidays hits

Skin cancer rates have soared by 45 per cent over the course of a decade, with young people also developing the disease, new figures show.

Cancer Research UK found rates of melanoma - the most deadly type of skin cancer - rose dramatically between 2004-2006 and 2014-2016, the most recent figures available.

The charity said the rise of package holidays in the 1970s and more recent surges in cheap flights for weekends abroad have meant a sharp rise in risks.

Rates of melanoma increased by 35 per cent for women and by 55 per cent for men.

Overall, the jump was from 18 cases per 100,000 people to 26.

Young drivers may be banned from road at night under safety plan
Scheme aims to reduce number of drivers involved in accidents during first years behind wheel

Young drivers could be banned from the road at night under plans to improve safety, the Department for Transport has announced. Figures show that a fifth are involved in an accident during their first year behind the wheel, and ministers are considering introducing a graduated licence system for novice drivers in England.

The scheme could feature a series of restrictions, such as a minimum learning period, not driving at night and not driving with passengers under a certain age. The DfT did not reveal how long the measures would remain in place once someone had passed their driving test.

Skin cancer risk 'not just from holiday sun'

Skin cancer rates have "soared" in the UK over the last decade, particularly in men and younger adults, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has warned.

The charity said that people needed to remember to protect their skin in the UK, as well as on holiday.

The increase is being linked to the rise in cheap flights, which means people are more likely to go abroad more frequently.

However, skin cancer is still more common in people over 65.

Experts say almost nine in 10 cases could be prevented by using a high factor sun cream.

They also advise:

Seek shade when the sun is strongest (between 11:00 and 15:00 in the UK)
Cover up with clothing - wear a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses
Apply sunscreen regularly. Use one with at least a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 which has four or five stars. Use generously and reapply regularly

Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of CRUK, said: "While some might think that a tan is a sign of good health, there is no such thing as a healthy tan, it's actually your body trying to protect itself from harmful rays."

CRUK, which is launching its Own Your Tone campaign, says people can be complacent about risk in the UK.

"Sun safety is not just for when you're going abroad," says health information manager Karis Betts. "The sun can be strong enough to burn in the UK from the start of April to the end of September."

'They're running around like idiots': EU leader's extraordinary denunciation of UK ministers' Brexit behaviour
‘Perhaps I am being a bit harsh, but it’s about time we became a bit harsh,’ says Frans Timmermans

A top EU official has accused the UK’s Brexit negotiators of “running around like idiots”, comparing UK ministers to the hapless characters from classic TV sitcom Dad’s Army.

BBC to use controversial TV licensing collection firm as 'outreach' officers

he BBC is to use Capita, the controversial TV Licensing collection firm, to provide the “outreach” officers who will visit the homes of over-75s in pursuit of licence fee payments.

Two years ago, the corporation ordered an investigation into reports that Capita employees were using aggressive tactics to target vulnerable people.

An area manager for the firm was recorded by an undercover reporter explaining the company’s methods of collection, which included taking payments on the spot with handheld card machines.

“Cash, debit, credit card - we’ll take anything. I tell people I’ll take shirt buttons,” the manager said. The company had an incentive scheme in which enforcement officials earned bonuses based on how many licence fees they sold on the doorstep.

A former RAF officer suffering from a brain tumour and early onset dementia was taken to court for non-payment after he forgot to renew his licence.

It was claimed that a Capita worker, told of the man’s condition, replied that he did not have time to “listen to excuses”. The case was only dropped when his doctor provided written evidence of his condition to magistrates.

Government scores TV licence own goal as it faces £850m blow from pensioners avoiding BBC fee

The BBC’s decision to scrap free TV licences for over-75s is expected to cost the Government more than if it had continued funding the licences, as the elderly rush to claim pension credit instead.

The Office for Budget Responsibility has warned that the broadcaster’s move to means-test the free licences would mean the Government could face a £850m bill, higher than the original cost for the Exchequer.

Tiger found lying on bed inside house while sheltering from India floods
Millions displaced and 97 dead in Bihar and Assam as monsoon continues

A tiger was found lying on a bed inside a house as it sheltered from a deadly monsoon in India.

The adult Royal Bengal tiger is thought to have strayed into a village near Kaziranga National Park, in Assam, as 95 per cent of the protected area was submerged by severe flooding.

The Wildlife Trust of India tweeted an image of the animal, which could be seen resting its head on its leg as it laid on the bed.

Bears and wolves to be reintroduced to woods near Bristol in pioneering project

An ambitious project to reintroduce bears and wolves to woodland near Bristol is about to be realised.

For the first time in a millennium, the two species will come nose to nose in Britain. The mammals would have once called the British Isles home, but were slowly driven out as human populations expanded.

The habitat, called Bear Wood, is being set up at Bristol Zoological Society's Wild Place project south of the city.

Later this month, members of the public will see the species in a recreation of their natural habitat.
