Kef fire risk 26/07/23: Very high

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8873 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1383 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1270 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8785 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

The human hand behind the fires
Negligence, ignorance and carelessness cause most of the country’s blazes, data show

Who lights the “fuse” that sparks wildfires and why? There are no easy explanations, as the Fire Service’s investigators have not discovered the cause of most wildfires in Greece. While it is true that individual arsonists or groups of arsonists acting according to a deliberate plan have been fingered in several cases, most appear to be caused by irresponsible citizens who inadvertently caused the spark – especially during periods of high temperatures and low rainfall – that led to such widespread destruction. According to data from the Fire Service that has been processed by environmental protection organizations, only a small proportion of blazes are caused by natural phenomena like lightning.

More specifically, the data show that 35% of wildfires in Greece are thought to be the result of negligence, though this is a very broad category with many different levels of culpability.

The Fire Service data go on to show that around 20% of wildfires are deliberate, meaning the product of arson, while the cause of the remaining 45% has not been determined.

A 63 y-o electrician on Kefalonia has been swindled out of 130,000€ after falling for a phishing scam. The scammers persuaded him to install software that allowed them to syphon the money from his accounts.

Unconnected but the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (Ανεξάρτητη Αρχή Δημοσίων Εσόδων a.k.a. AADE) are turning their attention to self-employed professionals such as electricians, plumbers, taxi drivers, as they frequently pay minimal tax by declaring poverty income.

More than 350,000 smart meters switched remotely to more expensive tariffs
Campaigners call on Government to outlaw practice amid cost of living crisis

Hundreds of thousands of homes with smart meters have been remotely switched to more expensive prepayment plans in the past six years.

Over 350,000 smart meters were remotely switched to repay debt between 2017 and 2023, The Telegraph can reveal.

It comes as Ofgem, the energy regulator, is set to bring in new rules setting a “minimum standard” that limits when firms can forcibly change a customer’s tariff. Campaigners are also calling on the Government to outlaw the practice altogether.

As new wildfires rage in Greece, a survivor and a firefighter share their stories

The fires that have ravaged Greece and its idyllic islands for over a week are dredging up painful memories of previous catastrophes, like the Mati fire in 2018 that killed more than 100 people. Drawing from first-hand experience, a survivor and a veteran firefighter share advice on what to do to survive a wildfire.
