Kef fire risk 08/08/23: Very high

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8875 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1314 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1268 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8839 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

In Greece, Olive Oil Remains Absent from Restaurant and Tavern Tables

The use of bulk olive oil in cruets for customer consumption has been banned in eateries since 2018. However, sealed, non-refillable bottles of olive oil have failed to replace them.

The Economic Police visited Kef and (surprise, surprise) discovered violations:

a taverna with two employees working outside declared hours,
a taverna / beach bar employing eight staff outside declared hours,
a cafe-bar not issuing receipts to nine customers and an absence of a staffing list
a beach bar /kantina not issuing receipts to 63 customers and no staff list: a 48-hour closure likely to be imposed

Local police arrested the owner of fifteen sunbeds operating without licence.

Man dies after violent clashes between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb fans

A man has died after being stabbed in violence among fans of AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb in Athens, police said.

The 29-year-old man was stabbed several times in clashes among fans of both clubs outside AEK’s stadium in Nea Philadelphia late on Monday, a police official said. Police said 100 to 120 Dinamo fans had shown up late on Monday near the AEK stadium, and where AEK fans had gathered.

Clashes broke out more than an hour after the visiting team’s training session ended and the team had left the stadium, with fans from both sides hurling flares, makeshift explosives and stones, police said.

Three Greek and five Croatian fans were also injured and being treated, and 98 people were arrested over taking part in the violence, the police official said.

Millions of voters’ details exposed as election watchdog reveals hack

Details of tens of millions of voters could have been accessed by hackers who targeted the Electoral Commission, the elections watchdog admitted.

The organisation has revealed its systems were breached back in October, apologising and insisting that there was little risk of “hostile actors” influencing the outcome of a vote.

Bully XL: Ministers reject calls to ban dog breed which killed seven in a year

Ministers have rejected calls to ban a dog breed which was responsible for killing seven people in just 12 months.

The XL Bully, which is closely related to the already-banned Pit Bull Terrier, has become infamous in the UK in recent years for being the breed behind scores of dog attacks and there have been widespread calls to have them outlawed.

'Human-like’ figure filmed walking unscathed among Greece’s wildfires

A video which appears to show a humanoid figure emerging from roaring wildfires has sparked a flood of theories on social media.

The clip, apparently taken as blazes tore through Greece last month, shows the mysterious silhouette walking and stumbling among the flames.

It was shared to TikTok by content creator The Paranormal Chic, who introduced it by saying: “Witnesses recorded what looks to be like a person walking through the fire, but they have stated that it was humanoid, but it was not a human.”
