Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8963 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1156 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.0991 USD   $1 USD = 0.9098 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7090 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5851 €UR
1 €UR = R20.7155 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0482 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Kitten stuck in a bin rescued in Sami, I gather the rescuers had to de-construct the bulk bin (which was a bit knackered).

Allegedly a phone fraud perpetrated on a 66 y-o Argostoli man yesterday morning. A smooth-tongued caller posing as a bank employee persuaded the man to 'pay 12,000€ tax' to receive 26,000€ in pension benefits.

More cases reported.

Crete: 12 teenagers detained after egg fight gets out of hand

A dozen secondary school students in Crete have been detained by police after an egg fight with a rival school got out of hand.

As students arrived for class at the city’s 1st Lyceum, students from another school were waiting to take revenge for a previous egg attack. In the ensuing melee, an elderly woman who happened to be passing the school was hit by an egg an knocked to the ground.

Most Greek Bulk Olive Oil Found Adulterated, Hidden from Tax Collectors

As olive oil prices soar out of sight and out of reach for many – seeing thieves target supplies and even trees – Greece is awash in bulk olive oil sold in tin cans, most of it adulterated, and sold secretly.

That was outlined to reporters at a news conference by leaders in the sector who said the underground sale of the bulk olive oil that’s not inspected is costing the state up to 70 million euros in lost tax revenues annually.

“More than two-thirds of the bulk olive oil samples that have been taken from time to time as part of checks are inappropriate or incompatible with the claims of their producers or, in the worst case, adulterated, said National Interprofessional Olive Oil Organization President Emmanouil Giannoulis.

It was said that about 70,000 tons is traded in bulk in the domestic market, without documents, in tins or plastic containers and that the quality is dubious in many cases, buyers taking their chances.

Further driving up prices has been a poor crop season being seen coming, the loss of trees to deadly summer fires and floss and most of Greece’s olive oil sold to other countries, much of it rebranded.

About 25 percent of domestic production and more than 70 percent of domestic consumption is traded in bulk, the journalists were told, explaining why there aren’t any statistics on more exact numbers.

Greek olive oils that aren’t sold in bulk are among the world’s best, especially Extra Virgin that is prized for its quality and health benefits, studies showing it can even drastically reduce the risk of dementia.

With prices jumping, doubling or more, many households and consumers can’t afford it and are switching to generic brands or other oils.

Alarm over predicted hottest year ever
Target set in Paris in 2015 to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C by century’s end now seems unrealistic

Just days before the crucial COP28 summit in Dubai on November 30, scientists are predicting that 2023 will be the warmest year ever recorded after the new record in October. The trend is also evident in Greece’s weather conditions, as this fall has been characterized by unprecedented heat, mosquitoes and fires.

In Greece, the National Observatory of Athens announced that this October was warmer than the average of the previous 15.

The largest positive temperature deviations were recorded in Macedonia and Thrace, with the average monthly values ranging up to 3.5°C above the normal for the season levels.

What is also noteworthy is that throughout October there were no negative temperatures – i.e. the thermometer did not fall below zero at any weather stations, even at mountain stations at altitudes above 2,000 meters.

Greece’s Housing Cost Among the Highest in the European Union

The Greeks are EU “champions” in terms of housing costs, according to data from the Bank of Greece.

More specifically, basedon the Financial Stability Report, the percentage of income that Greeks spend on housing is the highest in the EU and reached 34.2% in 2022 (followed by the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany), when the rest of the Europeans spend an average of 19.9%.

Also, 27% of the country’s population shouldered housing costs that accounted for more than 40% of their disposable income, when the corresponding percentage of the population in the euro area was 9.4%.

'We've been treated like criminals': Families left desperate and homeless as no-fault evictions soar

The number of no-fault evictions taking place in England has risen to its highest level in seven years, as an ITV News investigation finds families being made homeless with nowhere else to go.

Ministry of Justice data shows the number of Section 21 eviction claims - otherwise known as 'no-fault' evictions as the landlord does not have to state a reason - have jumped by 38%.

Between July and September 2023, 8,399 Section 21 eviction claims were taken to court by landlords, compared to 6,092 in the same period last year.

The number of bailiff repossessions also jumped by 29% to 2,307, the highest since before the pandemic.

One family told to leave their home every 8 minutes in England

The government has promised to scrap Section 21 evictions since 2019, but Housing Secretary Michael Gove has cast doubt on whether it will happen before the next general election - after promising to reform the court system in England before bringing in a ban.

An ITV News investigation has seen first-hand the impact on families evicted through Section 21.

In Northampton, Carol, her daughter and two grandchildren have privately rented their home for almost a decade. They have never missed a rent payment and have been good tenants.

They were notified earlier this year that the landlord wanted to sell the property and were given eight weeks to leave. Despite both working, Carol and her daughter couldn't find anywhere affordable to rent, and were told that the local council had no properties for them.

They went to court, but they lost their case. Right now, the law is on the landlords' side.

On the day of their eviction, with the bailiffs waiting outside, Carol told me the family had nowhere to go once they handed back the keys.

At 10am, the bailiffs walked through the door. They didn’t even knock – the property was theirs to take.

The moment Carol and her daughter walked out - the home they've lived in for nearly a decade with two little boys aged three and five - the locksmiths moved in. It is a swift and brutal process.

You'll probably be seeing this quite a lot on British TV in the run up to Christmas, a slightly bizarre advert for John Lewis:

There is of course another side to the coin, tenants drying washing inside and creating damp, they saying its the landlords fault, tenants pissing up their benefits and not paying rent, then trashing the place whilst the landlord has to apply to court to remove them, then faced with loss of rent plus having to pay to sort out the mess, more and more landlords are selling up because they are fed up! I have seen this first hand, yes there are good tenants, but they are in the minority in a lot of cases.

I've never lived, or had any desire to live, in a high rise block but I'd think it more difficult to hang your washing out. We have a combination washing machine / dryer to dry our washing in the house. That's not out choice, the landlord provided it (also the double glazed windows). We don't use it, far too expensive and none too effective. These days they don't use theirs, either.

If anyone can see where it says there are no bad tenants please point it out to me. There have always been bad tenants, yes, even when there was no housing crisis. If the majority of tenants are bad why does anyone become a landlord? It makes no sense. Any landlord who doesn't understand the risks is a fool and deserves to lose money. And there might actually be a very few people who do choose to live rough. But anyone who chooses to believe there is no housing crisis, or that it's all the fault of tenants, is living in a different reality and should, perhaps, consider a new career as a government minister.
